A Day in the Life

Lead and contribute to the overall system integration and characterization efforts across a wide variety of products, including applications on smartphones and tablets, cloud-based applications, custom embedded products, labeling, etc. Typical systems incorporate wireless communications and cybersecurity solutions.

In this role as a Systems Engineer II, you will contribute to developing Neuromodulation products from early feasibility through to market release. You will act as an influential systems engineer working within a matrix organization to support the Systems Engineering organization in defining, designing, developing, and testing complex medical device systems within the Neuromodulation Operating Unit. Neuromodulation products provide therapy for various conditions, including Chronic Pain, Cancer Pain, Severe Spasticity, Epilepsy, Dystonia, Essential Tremors, and Parkinson's Disease. Products include implantable and external neurostimulators, implantable infusion pumps, and associated device recharge and programming instruments.

You will work closely with a cross-functional engineering team to synthesize feature needs and technology trends into system requirements and design specifications. Typical system designs involve complex electronic circuits, wireless communication, batteries, and consumer and medical technologies. Systems are designed with the user in mind to provide innovative solutions in the marketplace. This individual will apply proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of best practices to guide his/her team on design, design characterization, verification testing, operations support, and product release issues.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform system-level verification & validation activities, documenting the scope of system V&V effort while working with other engineering functions to ensure the system meets the requirements, user needs, and intended uses.

  • Leadand contribute to the overall system integration and characterization efforts across various products, including applications on smartphones and tablets, cloud-based applications, custom embedded products, labeling, etc. Typical systems incorporate wireless communications and cybersecurity solutions.

  • Provide hands-on systems evaluation for design robustness and data collection to ensure system maturity and reliability.

  • Define and/or review requirements for implantable medical device systems that meet the expectations and uses of the customer, regulatory agencies, and the business.

  • Ensure customer needs, use cases, and user workflows are translated into specific, well-written requirements, design features, and associated integration test cases: document tradeoffs, rationale, and potential solutions.

  • Lead/participate in technical architecture activities to drive complete system definition, establish performance metrics, and define system interfaces.

  • Perform/participate in Risk Analysis activities, such as FMEAs and Hazard Analyses, for systems, features, and implementations to eliminate or mitigate the risks in the identified scenarios.

  • Support Human Factors usability studies and other applicable system design validation-related activities to ensure successful validation of user needs, intended uses, and associated risk control mitigations.

  • Identify and resolve product issues internally during product development and post-launch if field issues arise.

  • Provide support to customers and clients for Neuromodulation systems during and after launch.

  • Manage significant / moderately complex projects involving delegation of work and review of work products, sometimes acting as a team leader.

  • Provide guidance, coaching, and training to other employees within the job area.

  • Establish and advocate for best practices and continuous improvement to mature Systems Engineering knowledge and processes.

  • Champion consistent implementation of the Quality System across projects.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a technically related field required

  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering,Mechanical Engineeringor similar discipline

  • Experience developing system definition, system design and requirements, requirement tracing to subsystems and interface requirements, and system verification and validation strategy and testing.

  • Previous medical device experience with a history of developing products from technology to market release

  • Experience with designing for the Hardware/Firmware/communication interfaces of electronic devices

  • Experience in troubleshooting firmware/software interfaces

  • Experience developing sensor-based systems, including closed-loop feedback control systems.

  • Experience developing data analytics algorithms and machine learning algorithms.

  • Product Risk Assessment and Risk Management Experience (Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, etc.)

  • Experience working with and designing systems to meet ISO and Quality System Regulation requirements, including IEC-60601-1, -2, -6, IEC-62304, ISO-14971, FDA 21CFR820.30 for Class I, II, and III medical systems

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$83,200.00 - $124,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
