This project leader will lead, and coordinate research activities related to knowledge-guided machine learning (KGML) through multiple existing projects, develop proposals for research grants, and contribute to education missions through teaching and students mentoring. Duties/Responsibilities (with % for each duty): * 50% The primary focus of this Researcher will lead knowledge guided machine learning (KGML) research with multiple applications to the food-soil-water-air-energy nexus. The researcher is expected to develop and apply the KGML approach to enhance the modeling of a range of processes related to agroecosystem sustainability, with a focus on managing greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and reactive nitrogen (N) losses to the air and water bodies. The researcher is also expected to develop methods to assimilate diverse data (e.g., those remote sensing and low-cost sensors) into KGML models and enhance the ability to predict complex interconnected processes. The Researcher is also expected to coordinate KGML-related research in the UMN lead AI-CLIMATE Institute. * 20% The Researcher will be expected to lead efforts or collaborate on research reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication and invention disclosures, and participate in seminars, national and international conferences when needed. * 20% The Researcher is expected to lead (as principal investigator) or contribute (as co-PI or senior personnel) to grant proposals writing to support this research. * 10% The Researcher is expected to contribute to teaching courses in the BBE department, including topics like computer programming and ecological engineering. Qualifications Required Qualifications: * Advanced degree. in quantitative disciplines such as earth and atmospheric science, environmental science, remote sensing, ecology, math and statistics, or related fields. * Strong programing experience (e.g., Python, Fortran, or C++ in the Linux environment) and familiarity with supercomputing or big data analytical systems * Demonstrated skills in development and testing of numerical representations of complex processes suitable for site, regional, and global scale models * Familiar with application of machine learning in modeling dynamic systems * Excellent oral and written communications skills * Proven substantial research and publication record Preferred Qualifications: * Experience directly supervising undergraduate and graduate students in preparation and implementation of research projects * Experience with publishing high impact journal papers * Rich experience in hybrid modeling, knowledge-guided machine learning or physics- informed neural networks About the Department www.bbe.umn.edu The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (BBE) discovers and teaches solutions for the sustainable use of renewable resources and enhancement of the environment.
