Apply for Job Job ID364081 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyAcademic Full/Part TimePart-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code9546 Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin Add to Favorite Jobs Email this Job About the Job Postdoc position on fracture mechanics of rock We are seeking an individual to fill a postdoctoral research position in the Lacabanne Rock Mechanics Laboratory for a six-month period to develop a fracture-testing platform using a thick-walled cylinder geometry and an elastomeric insert for cavity expansion. Digital image correlation (DIC) and acoustic emission (AE) techniques within the space constraints of a servo-hydraulic load frame should complement the fracture testing. The successful candidate must have a PhD in civil engineering or related field. The candidate should have a strong background in experimental mechanics and fracture mechanics, and expertise in computational methods pertaining to DIC and AE, as well as finite element modeling of fracture. Also of importance are communication skills and being able to work with other post-doctoral researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students. The postdoc will be required to: (1) attend and participate in monthly meetings; (2) supervise students who are also working on the project; (3) generate results in a timely manner for sharing with other research members; (4) write monthly reports and present seminars; and (5) prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals. The position is available immediately. The initial appointment will be for six months at the 50% level (20 hours per week) and is renewable. Positions description (must include a list of required and preferred qualifications as well as job duties with percentages assigned to each primary job duty) 40% Conducting fracture tests and developing procedures for characterizing fracture 25% Analyzing fracture data (DIC and AE) and modeling fracture propagation 25% Writing reports and manuscripts; presenting results 10% Working with project personnel Qualifications Required qualifications: PhD in civil engineering or related field Experience with (i) fracture testing using a closed-loop, servo-hydraulic load frame, (ii) computational modeling of fracture using finite element software, (iii) DIC and AE techniques within the fracture-testing platform An ability to work independently and work effectively with a team Preferred qualifications include: Experience with data acquisition systems and related instrumentation for AE monitoring Experience with speckle methods and data interpretation About the Department The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering resides within the College of Science & Engineering.
