Apply for Job Job ID362176 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyAcademic Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code9546 Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin Add to Favorite Jobs Email this Job About the Job Dr. Chris Paola, an interdisciplinary researcher based in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences and the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory within the College of Science and Engineering, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to carry out experimental research at the interface between seismology and marine sedimentology. 65% - Experimental Research related to sediment transport during earthquakes - Perform experiments using our unique SAFL "earthquake duct" to study entrainment conditions during earthquakes, for a wide range of sediment and flow conditions. - Time permitting, carry out experiments on the transport and deposition of earthquake-entrained sediment. - Analyze resulting data in relation to field observations of earthquake-related deposits 10% - Synthesis of field data - Analyze existing field data, including but not limited to any the candidate has collected, to aid in experiment design and for comparison with experimental results 25% - Writing and Publications - Write manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications based upon research findings. Qualifications Required Qualifications * A PhD in marine sedimentology or a related discipline by the start date * Extensive familiarity with earthquake-related sediment deposits from oceans and/or lakes * Strong background in general sediment analysis and quantitative characterization (e.g. grain size, water content, etc.) * Previous experience working with the SAFL "earthquake duct" experimental facility or something similar in function * Good background in seismological concepts as they relate to sediment entrainment and transport * Excellent "people skills" to work with diverse staff members and other researchers * Strong writing and public communication skills About the Department The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research lab and educational facility under the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
