These positions are either temporary or casual in nature (see definition below). All of the positions hired are hourly, with schedules set by a supervisor which may vary. Restrictions: students enrolled at a UM system campus who are eligible for student employment (e.g. undergraduate or graduate employment programs) are not eligible for employment in this job classification. Minnesota Statute limits the eligibility, number of hours and/or days worked in this job classification. Incumbents perform a wide variety of nonacademic and/or academic work responsibilities on a temporary or casual work schedule. The definition of temporary: employees are limited to 67 or fewer days of work in a calendar year. The definition of casual: employees can work 14 or fewer hours each week, and are not limited to 67 days of work in a calendar year. Responsibilities: Not currently employed by the University of Minnesota Students not enrolled in any of the UMN system campuses Individuals not currently employed by the University of Minnesota can be hired to perform work responsibilities where the appointment: (a) does not exceed 67 workdays in a calendar year; or (b) may or may not exceed 67 workdays in a calendar year but hours worked per week does not exceed 14. Students who are not enrolled at any of the University of Minnesota system campuses. Eligible individuals are: Full-time students from a nonprofit or public institution prior to being hired and intend to continue as a student during or after the temporary employment; under age 22; and the appointment does not exceed 100 workdays in a calendar year. a) Individuals currently employed full time (i.e. 40 hours/week) by the University of Minnesota may also be employed in a temporary or casual position when: The appointment does not exceed 67 workdays in a calendar year or Appointing the second and subsequent appointments that 67 workdays but the hours worked per week on the second or subsequent appointment do not exceed 14. This job classification will be used when the second appointment is non-exempt work, regardless of the nature of work in the first appointment OR whenever the primary appointment is non-exempt regardless of the nature of work in the second appointment. b) University of Minnesota employees working in a part time job (e.g. appointed to a position that is less than 40 hours per week) can only be appointed to a temporary or casual position if both position are in the same employee group and/or PELRA unit." This is a continuous posting; applicants will be hired as positions become available throughout the year. These temporary positions are periodically available to individuals holding a high school diploma and applicable training and/or experience. The positions vary in areas of specialization depending on availability of funding. Work hours will vary. Qualifications Required qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent. Educational, certification and work experience requirements are based on and cannot exceed the qualifications for work performed in comparable UM job classifications. About the Department The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (BBE) discovers and teaches solutions for the sustainable use of renewable resources and enhancement of the environment. BBE integrates engineering, science, technology, and management into all degree programs taught by internationally recognized faculty.
