Apply for Job Job ID361483 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyGraduate Assistants Full/Part TimePart-Time Regular/TemporaryTemporary Job Code9571 Employee ClassGrad/Prof Student Position Add to Favorite Jobs Email this Job About the Job Position Overview The Integrated Learning (IL) Instructor serves as the lead instructor for EDHD 1620: Integrated Learning in the Sciences, a 2-credit learning support course paired with BIOL 1009: Introduction to Biology, lecture section 030, MW 01:00 PM - 02:15 PM The instructor attends the core BIOL lecture (Fall/Spring) and creates discussion and/or recitation-based curriculum that enhances the lecture content and provides deeper integration of the material into the students' understanding of the subject. The goal of the course is to help students attain greater mastery of the subject as well as transferable and effective study habits and learning strategies, test taking skills, and an understanding of how to engage with social science research and primary literature. The instructor will work to evaluate curriculum effectiveness towards supporting academic success in the main class and in building successful academic navigation and study skills for students. The instructor will demonstrate an ability to adapt to different learning and teaching styles, personalities and modalities of learning. The instructor collaborates with two different professors in the Fall and Spring semesters and must adapt to different teaching styles of the core course professors. Instructors may have to make adjustments on an on-going basis as the University makes adjustments related to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Integrated Learning course meets weekly T/TH 11:15 AM - 12:05 PM (50 minutes) and is reserved for students in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) and President's Emerging Scholars Programs (PES) which serves students from low-income backgrounds, and/or those who are first generation in college and students with disabilities. TRIO SSS is a federally funded U.S. Department of Education grant program. TRIO SSS at the University of Minnesota is located in the College of Education and Human Development and has been supporting low income, first generation college students and students with disabilities as they pursue their undergraduate degrees since 1976. Key Responsibilities Coordinate 100% Teach one section EDHD 1620, a 2-credit Integrated Learning (IL) course on T/TH 11:15 AM - 12:05 PM (50 minutes) Attend BIOL 1009: Introduction to Biology lecture section 030 on MW 01:00 PM - 02:15 PM in the Fall, Spring lecture section will be determined later on Develop and implement curriculum that supplements and enhances lessons taught in the BIOL 1009 lecture Create methods of content integration that build effective study and learning strategies within Biology and the sciences Maintain course records, grade exams, quizzes, papers, and projects Collaborate with BIOL 1009 faculty to obtain access to lecture materials and student records Hold office hours for student drop-ins and meet with students as needed (min 2 hour/week is required) Build classroom community to enhance cooperative learning Provide feedback to students on a regular and ongoing basis to improve academic skills to successfully complete the target course Conduct pre-and-post tests on course content Assess progress in meeting course objectives. Provide semester summary reports and make recommendations to improve course effectiveness Participate in the University academic early alert system to inform advisors on academic progress. Maintain relationships with TRIO SSS and PES advisers to best support student academic success, which includes informing them of student issues and/or concerns as they arise and providing ongoing updates as needed. Refer students to advisers or other college and campus resources as appropriate Partner and collaborate as part of a team of Integrated Learning Instructors as well as part of the TRIO SSS staff. Work with and support fellow IL instructors on pedagogy, curriculum development and design, best practices in teaching and learning, and professional development. Qualifications Required Qualifications Current University of Minnesota graduate student in good academic standing and enrolled in coursework for duration of appointment Current University of Minnesota graduate student in teaching-related disciplines Completed bachelor's degree in Biology or similar science disciplines OR; teaching experience in Biology or similar science discipline Experience providing learning assistance (teaching, tutoring, etc.) at the undergraduate level Experience in and commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds who are typically underrepresented in higher education, including low income and first-generation college students and students with disabilities Able to teach both fall and spring terms of academic year 2024-2025 Preferred Qualifications Strong communication skills Experience developing and evaluating curriculum Strong classroom management skills Former TRIO/similar program participant or have similar lived experiences/identities of TRIO students (low-income backgrounds, and/or those who are first generation in college and students with disabilities) Personally overcome academic, economic, and/or social-cultural obstacles to success in college Team player and collaborator About the Department Department Overview TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), housed in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), enhances student success for those who are first in their family to go to college, meet income eligibility, and/or have a disability through 1:1 tailored advising, academic support, courses and activities designed to support students in their college journey towards graduation.
