UMPhysicians Health Psychologist in Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School is seeking a Health Psychologist. This position is a 1.0 FTE Assistant Professor on the Academic Track with Excellence in Clinical Care. This position is .85 FTE clinical, .15 FTE academic/research. It primarily involves clinical assessment, psychotherapy/intervention, and consultation with adult medical patients, including acute, chronic, and life-threatening illness, and transplant populations. Clinical experience in medical settings is a prerequisite. Outpatient activities take place in the M Health Clinics and Surgery Center (CSC) and involve working with patients throughout the CSC and M Health System. Inpatient activities may include psychological consultation on inpatient medical, surgical, critical care and rehabilitation units of the University of Minnesota Medical Center. The position offers contact with diverse clinical populations, including, but not limited to primary care, cardiology, endocrine, oncology, neurology, solid organ and bone marrow transplantation, pain, sleep disorders, weight management, and cochlear implants. It also provides exposure to a broad range of psychiatric conditions. The position may involve participation in quality improvement projects such as chronic disease management programs (e.g., diabetes, depression). Although this position is primarily clinical, opportunities for research collaboration exist. There is an expectation of scholarly activity. Participation in ongoing research projects and in grant-funded research is encouraged (e.g., data collection, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant preparation). Limited involvement in teaching and training is possible. Duties/Responsibilities: 1. Psychotherapy/Intervention - Eclectic psychotherapy competencies, including acceptance and commitment therapy, behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, crisis-intervention, motivational interviewing, and supportive therapy. 2. Psychological Consultation - Assessment and treatment of patients, collaboration with multidisciplinary/interprofessional teams in outpatient and inpatient medical settings. 3. Psychological Assessment - Diagnostic assessment, including administration, scoring, and interpretation of standard psychological instruments (e.g., MMPI 2/2 RF/3, Beck Depression Inventory) and screening instruments (PHQ-9, GAD-7, CAGE-AID, PROMIS). 4. Appropriate management and timely documentation of clinical services, including billing, prior authorization, treatment planning, timely response to outpatient and inpatient consultation referrals, timely completion of clinical management tasks, communication with other health professionals, and use of the electronic medical record (EMR). 5. Meets clinical expectations for quality and quantity (i.e., productivity, caseload, timeliness) of services provided. 6. Teaching - Provide teaching to patients, families, the public, psychology trainees, and trainees and staff in other health disciplines. Provide supervision to clinical health psychology post-doctoral fellow and participate in the fellowship's academic training. 7. Research - Participation in research activities is expected. Encouragement to participate in funded research projects including study design, implementation, analysis, manuscript preparation and to pursue grant funding for new projects. 8. Participation in clinical quality improvement activities. 9. Participation as needed in health psychology clinical activities in outpatient clinics, inpatient UMMC units, and via telehealth. It involves broad collaborations and teamwork with physicians, health psychologists in the GIM Division, and other faculty, staff, and trainees in the University, Medical School, University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC), M Health, and clinics. Qualifications Ph.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from APA-accredited doctoral program; Completed psychology internship in APA-accredited program in a healthcare setting; Previous clinical experience (i.e., assessment, intervention, consultation) with medical, psychiatric, and neurological populations; License eligible including having passed EPPP. License from the Minnesota Board of Psychology is required by start date; Ability to work with diverse populations and willingness to promote a just, equitable, and inclusive educational, clinical, and research environment. Preferred Qualifications Previous provision of psychological services in academic healthcare environment; Board certified in clinical health psychology or clinical psychology or intent to pursue board certification; Strong statistical analysis, professional and scholarly writing skills; Experience in providing clinical care as part of multidisciplinary/interprofessional teams. Record of academic/professional scholarly publication; Preference will be given to scientist-practitioner graduates from APA-accredited clinical or counseling psychology doctoral programs (Ph.D.) with APA-accredited internship in a medical setting and eligibility for board certification in clinical health psychology or clinical psychology; Experience providing supervision.
