A Day in the Life

Medtronic is looking for a dynamic, strategic Communications Program Director to join the CEO Communications and Operations team . In this role you will help develop strategic programming and execute communications for our Chairman and CEO, articulating our business strategy and complex issues with key stakeholders, including employees, customers, government partners, the business community, healthcare providers, and patients.

We’re looking for a strategic thinker and collaborative team player with a proven ability to create and implement outcomes-based communications plans, strategies, and tactics that advance business initiatives.

This is a highly visible role that requires a proactive, forward-thinking approach and the ability to assess communications opportunities, understand many different audiences, and engage stakeholders in bold new ways. The successful candidate combines both strategy development and execution with a demonstrated ability to establish clear objectives and collaborate with all levels of the organization to create programs and content that generate meaningful outcomes.

Team is working hybrid in our Operational Headquarters in Fridley, MN, and position requires the ability to support occasional evening activities/work "off hours."

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Strategic Communications Leadership :

  • Lead development of strategic communications plans, messages, and tactics to amplify high-profile CEO engagements, in collaboration with colleagues across the enterprise, including Global Communications and Corporate Marketing.

  • Manage CEO thought leadership platform, including identifying/securing select opportunities with targeted audiences around the globe, while also developing key messages and proof points to ensure consistent framework around core enterprise strategies that are authentic to the CEO’s voice.

  • Program Management :

  • Lead multi-functional teams to design and implement comprehensive, integrated Marquee engagements around the world – strategically deploying the CEO to advance critical issues with government officials, deepen strategic relationships with select customers and partners, strengthen alignment with Medtronic leaders and employees, amplify the CEO voice / Medtronic brand with target audiences worldwide.

  • Support the development and execution of major CEO meetings designed to align and inspire leaders and employees across the organization, including creating the CEO’s messaging and presentation(s), as well as partnering with other executives to build and deliver additional engaging and impactful sessions on the agenda.

  • Content Development:

  • Partner with team to create, edit, and/or review all CEO communications, including speeches, video scripts, emails/letters, quotes and other communications to Medtronic leaders, employees, and external stakeholders to promote, enhance and protect Medtronic and the CEO brand and reputation.

  • Develop compelling presentations and talking points for speaking engagements that tell a story, reinforce the CEO’s thought leadership platform, and resonate with the targeted audience.

  • CEO Engagement:

  • Ensure the CEO is briefed/prepared for all engagements with internal and external audiences by partnering with outside organizations and internal leaders to create robust briefing materials, including highlighting key objectives of engagements, backgrounders on the organization / leaders /commercial relationship / etc. and other information needed to successfully participate in the meeting (incl. recommended talking points).

  • For select engagements, serve as primary contact / staff to CEO.

  • Measurement and Analytics :

  • Use data-driven insights to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies, ensuring alignment with business objectives and driving continuous improvement.

  • Incorporate feedback mechanisms and metrics into communications plans, and implement changes based on key findings that increase effectiveness.

  • Collaborator :

  • Serve as partner and mentor to other members of the CEO Communications and Operations team, helping coach them on writing, story development, and other work in support of day-to-day efforts, as well as ensuring all deliverable deadlines are met across the subfunction.

  • Cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with cross-functional business partners, including Operating Unit leaders, Regional leaders, Sales, Finance, Legal and Regulatory, Research and Development, Government Affairs, marketing and communications colleagues, and other subject matter experts.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 10+ years of relevant experience (8+ years with an Advanced degree)

  • 7+ years of progressive leadership experience

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as marketing, communications, public relations, policy, English, or journalism

  • Master’s degree in business, communications, marketing, or related field

  • Experience in the Office of the CEO and/or staff to Senior Executive leadership.

  • Executive presence and ability to work with discretion

  • Strong interpersonal and written communications skills

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships across a variety of functions and with all levels of management and employees

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and excel under pressure

  • Experience in successfully navigating and executing initiatives in a global, matrixed, corporate environment

  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, and ability to work in ambiguous situations

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver communications plans and tactics with measurable outcomes, using multiple channels, including digital/social media

  • Medical technology/medical device industry experience

  • Familiarity/usage of AI tools

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$168,000.00 - $252,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
