The successful candidate will join 3 medical oncologists, 1 radiation oncologist (also board-certified in medical oncology) and 4 medical oncology house officers. The service is supported by 4 medical oncology technicians and 3 radiation oncology technicians, as well as a veterinary technician assistant. The clinical Oncology team strives to advance clinical care, research and training/teaching in a team-based, collaborative academic environment. Position: The UMN is offering an outstanding opportunity for a tenure-track or contract (non-tenure, clinical) track full time (100% appointment) faculty position in Radiation Oncology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Position Description: The successful candidate will work with the head of radiation oncology to grow and expand the provision of exceptional, cutting edge radiation therapy care for companion animals. Responsibilities upon hire will include provision of clinical service, clinical instruction to house officers and students, contribution to comparative research, and personal development and discipline/non-discipline related service to the UMN-CVM and other professional organizations. The percentage of time allocated for clinical service, teaching, and research is negotiable depending on the candidate's professional goals and experience. Clinical Opportunities: The UMN Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is a comprehensive specialty hospital with specialists in most disciplines, and the VMC currently houses the only veterinary linear accelerator in the state. The radiation oncology clinical service benefits from a close and highly collaborative relationship with the radiation oncologists, therapists and medical physicists within the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Medical School. Patient and machine quality assurance, as well as complex planning and delivery support, is provided by medical physicists. The successful candidate also has an opportunity to attend contouring/treatment planning rounds, journal clubs, and research seminars in the UMN Medical School Department of Radiation Oncology for direct engagement with an active group of physician researchers, graduate students, and house officers. To further support Comparative Radiation Oncology translational efforts, we have purchased a new Varian EDGE linear accelerator with 6MV and 6-15MeV capability and is outfitted with a high definition MLC, high intensity mode (flattening free filter [FFF] mode), 6-degrees of freedom couch, and kV imaging system. The EDGE will also come with integrated software that includes Eclipse, ARIA and Velocity to allow for flexible and customized radiation therapy planning and delivery (clinical setups, 3DCRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT/SRT, SRS) suitable to the wide array of cases. A ten year service contract will ensure uninterrupted and consistent hardware and software support. The completed installation date for the EDGE is estimated to be January 2023. In vivo dosimetry is provided on site with use of an OSLD reader. The radiation oncology control room houses a radiation planning room connected to the control room. Radiation oncology also a central oncology space with medical oncology that houses a separate chemotherapy administration room and microscope/rounds room. On-site supporting equipment includes digital radiography, computed tomography (currently in the process of replacing a 64 slice Toshiba Aquilion with a 128-slice Siemens Drive), and a 3T Siemens Prisma MRI. Research Opportunities: The successful applicant will be expected to participate in independent and/or collaborative research tha advances basic and translational Comparative Radiation Oncology. There is active research in immunotherapy for solid tumors, quantitative imaging, radiobiology, and model development for radiation studies. There are numerous opportunities for cooperative, team science-based research outside the CVM, including the UMN Medical School , the UMN (an NCI designated cancer center) and its . Numerous funding opportunities are available, including (but not limited to) the Comparative Medicine Signature Program, CVM Resident and Graduate Student Grants program, Masonic Cancer Center funding programs, Clinical & Translational Science Institute K and R Scholar Development Grants, and the MnDRIVE program. The University of Minnesota is a member of the V Foundation's Canine Oncology Research Consortium (CORC), the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium, and the Comparative Oncology Trials Consortium (COTC). Medical Oncology house officers provide clinical support for trials. The UMN-CVM Clinical Investigation Center also supports clinical studies and non-rodent preclinical research with technical infrastructure, budgeting assistance, and study coordination according to GCP and GLP guidelines. RAR provides support for rodent studies if needed. Opportunities to attend regular Masonic Cancer Center seminars, contouring/planning rounds at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Oncology-related Rounds (Musculoskeletal Oncology, Sarcomas, Solid Tumors, Brain Tumors), and the Animal Cancer Care and Research meetings provide exposure to potential collaborators across campus. Teaching Opportunities & Professional Development: Faculty are expected to participate in teaching and/or mentoring, including DVM, graduate students and house officers. Support and instruction for teaching is provided by the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation (including the Early Career Teaching and Learning Program). For faculty with a focus on teaching, there are several applied research opportunities in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) that aid in assessing the impact of new and innovative teaching practices. Leadership, communication and other professional development training is also available across campus.
