The position may be full or part-time and is a contract faculty role. Applications are open and will remain open until the position is filled. Primary duties include: 1) Coordinate Small Animal Surgery II course (CVM 6944), provide associated lectures, lab instructor coordination, lab planning, lab participation and management of surgery days.. 2) Professional development course series (CVM 6905/07 Y1 F/S, CVM 6938/53 Y2 F/S, and CVM 6970/43 Y3 F/S) involvement, as co-facilitator and instructor to blend community medicine components into student learning. Strategies to involve and support members of multiple services in the importance and value of Spectrum of Care as a viable veterinary medicine practice framework. 3) Active engagement and participation with the new curriculum design committee to lay out how and when various surgical skills courses can best fit into the new DVM curriculum. 4) The UMN SDSU 2 + 2 Education Program Liaison will be responsible for managing and facilitating collaboration between the University of Minnesota (UMN) and South Dakota State University (SDSU). The primary focus of this role is to ensure that course agreements are signed and executed, faculty collaborations are effective, curricula are harmonized, and tuition billing recommendations are made. Additionally, the Liaison will work closely with faculty and administrative teams to determine optimal outcomes assessments for the first two years of the collaborative program. This effort will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and will operate at 20% FTE. 5) Outreach, community partnerships, and service will be an important aspect of this role. The incumbent will contribute to a variety of Community Medicine initiatives and serve as a leader to look strategically at how programs and future opportunities are structured to meet their goals, the needs of the community and the University, are financially sustainable and how they fit with the DVM curriculum under development and the mission and goals of the College. Additional duties: Primary care level case management (medical and surgical) in service learning and resource-limited settings, in collaboration with partners such as AHS University Ave Clinic and student-led programs with Native Nations (SIRVS- Student Initiative for Reservation Veterinary Services) and (VeTouch-Veterinary Outreach for Urban Community Health) and NGOs in underserved metropolitan areas. Expand opportunities for experiential Community Medicine training for veterinary students. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Minimum of 2 years of surgical experience, including primary-level care, spay/castration/soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures. Evidence of outstanding interpersonal skills and teamwork mentality, and the potential to develop collaborative research is highly desirable. We seek a colleague that is experienced in and excited about Access to Veterinary Care, Spectrum of Care, servant leadership, and service learning. The applicant must also have experience in didactic and clinical teaching and have excellent oral and written communication. Preferred Qualifications Clinical experience in community medicine work and or shelter medicine Clinical experience or interest in behavior management of pets Experience - Community engagement an partnership building Clinical skills teaching experience (DVM students) Experience with curriculum development About the Department The Community Medicine team consists of two faculty veterinarians, one certified veterinary technician, and one One Health Clinic project manager. In 2020, UMN CVM established a Dean's level initiative in Community Medicine (CM), building on a strong legacy of service learning to expand CM concepts into all stages of the veterinary curriculum, interprofessional education experiences, and additional opportunities for hands-on training. The CM program addresses the access to veterinary care challenges pet owners in our community face, while fundamentally changing how we train students and how we address the need for new knowledge in this space. The program's three arms include didactic teaching (Spectrum of Care, Access to Veterinary Care), clinical teaching (two fourth year clinical rotations focused on Spectrum of Care and Access to Veterinary Care), and community partnerships/service learning (SIRVS, VeTouch, One Health Clinic). Our Anesthesia and Surgery services work closely with this position. We have 5 faculty and 4 residents in Anesthesia. In Surgery, we have 2 faculty and 2 residents. They help provide their skills and expertise during the surgery labs. Members of the Teaching Technician Team are carefully selected and receive ongoing training to enhance student learning and support faculty in achieving educational goals. Their training emphasizes guiding students to self-assess their understanding and performance of clinical skills, providing constructive feedback and feed-forward to support growth, and fostering a safe, supportive learning environment. Additionally, they collaborate with faculty to reinforce teaching objectives, facilitate hands-on learning experiences, and ensure consistency in skill development, all of which contribute to a more comprehensive and engaging educational experience for students.
