Kelly Services Animal Care Supervisor in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Animal Care Supervisor - Minneapolis MN

Type: Direct Hire

Shift: M-F 8a-5p

Pay Rate: $28-$35/hr (flexible, DOE)

Responsible for the care of various laboratory animals following applicable safety, sanitation, and research requirements. It includes supervising personnel, facilities, and equipment necessary to carry out these work requirements.

Duties/Responsibilities:

30% Employee Supervision

  • Supervise and direct the work of Laboratory Attendants (LA), Laboratory Animal Attendants (LAA), and Laboratory Animal Care Technicians (LACT)

  • Plan and implement training/cross-training of staff for standard, consistent operations across all RAR animal facilities

  • Ensure proper and consistent husbandry care for all species and areas within RAR

  • Create and maintain work schedules, including weekend/holiday coverage

  • Provide immediate and annual performance feedback

  • Mentor employees to further career goals and support continued educational and certification opportunities

  • Ensure direct reports have the necessary resources and support

  • Share weekend and on-call responsibilities as needed

30% Equipment and Facilities

  • Collaborate with RAR management on facility and equipment needs

  • Ensure staff are trained for proper maintenance and notify Facilities Maintenance as appropriate

  • Develop and maintain a system for monitoring facility utilization, including forecasts and investigator requests

  • Ensure timely and efficient census activities and cage card management

15% Animal Care

  • Ensure proper onboarding and training of new staff with the Training Coordinator

  • Assign tasks related to cleaning, disinfecting rooms and hallways, and husbandry, including feeding and watering animals

  • Report animal welfare concerns to the Area Veterinarian

10% Procedures and Protocols

  • Write, review, and edit standard operating procedures to remain current with AALAC standards

  • Monitor and maintain standards in the vivarium, addressing any noncompliance or deficiencies with RAR management

10% Provide Information

  • Collaborate with investigators by responding to written and verbal requests

  • Write, review, and update SOPs

  • Provide coaching, training, and mentoring to RAR staff

5% Teamwork

  • Provide coaching, training, and mentoring to staff

  • Support and back up other RAR area supervisors as needed, which may require driving to another area of the University

  • Work with laboratory animals, including cleaning, feeding, and monitoring

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related lab animal experience, or a combination of related education and work experience totaling at least 6 years

  • If assigned as a driver, a Department of Motor Vehicle record check is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ALAT or higher certification through AALAS

  • Supervisory experience in the lab animal industry

  • Hands-on experience with multiple lab animal species

  • Understanding of cage wash and vivarium sanitation operations
