Job Description:

This position is 40 hours per week (8-hour shifts, 1:00pm - 9:30pm). Primarily Monday through Friday, with minimal weekend, holiday, and on-call requirements. This position may require support to the Endoscopy Department with processing endoscopes as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Oversees the daily assignments of CS technicians in the following areas: instrument assembly, decontamination, sterilization, chemical and biological testing, surgical case cart assembly, and Sterile Storage.

  2. Possesses an expertise and higher level of knowledge within the department in order to respond to all requests from OR staff, SS Management and surgeons.

  3. Assists with orientation and on-going training of CS technicians. Provides CS Supervisor and Manager with feedback on status of CS techs’ skill levels, recommending areas of improvement and concentration on additional training.

  4. Fosters an open and supportive role with all CS Techs, providing support and assistance where needed. Initiates interactions with co-workers that lean toward a “continuous improvement” mindset and work environment.

  5. Maintains open communication with CS Supervisors, CS Clinical Support Specialist and OR Service Leads regarding issues with surgical instrument sets and requests for changes to sets.

  6. Ensures adequate stock of all necessary instrumentation and supplies for both the CS Dept. and the OR case cart assembly. Assists the CS supervisor with coordination of supply and instrument inventories, including: outages, repairs, deliveries, etc.

  7. Maintains a high standard for proper care, handling and storage of sterile supplies and instrument sets. Notifies CS Supervisor or Manager if sterility conditions are compromised.

  8. Collaborates with OR Charge Nurse and OR staff throughout the day regarding on-going surgeries. Maintains continual awareness of the progression of the daily surgical schedule via the OR Trackers

  9. Anticipates workflow accordingly and provides on-going information to the CS staff about work prioritization. Coordinates all IUSS expedited turn-overs according to department protocols.

  10. Notifies CS Supervisor or Resource Leader regarding issues or questions with data integrity in the Maestro instrument management system. Has Supervisory access to make edits in the system as needed.

  11. Maintains high standards of accuracy with on-going daily review of sterilization records and documentation procedures, including proper operation of the sterilizers and biological testing. Assures that all CS technicians are accurately documenting and accounting for each item and each load sterilized, and each biological test’s recorded results.

  12. Meets with vendors and couriers when dropping off loaner kits. Assures that they are completing the Loaner Log accurately, providing all necessary information for the associated surgery, including IFU and appropriate weight of each kit. Separates and reassembles kits if needed, meeting weight and kit layout standards. Numbers and documents each kit accordingly.

  13. Notifies CS Supervisor and CS Clinical Support Specialist about broken or missing instruments. Ensures that items are properly identified and removed from service.

  14. Initiates and participates in continuous improvement efforts. Identifies ways for protocols to be improved but also assures that existing quality controls are followed.

  15. Identifies and follows emergency protocols when failure of sterilization processes occur. Demonstrates knowledge and good judgment in troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, reprioritizing work flow and work load based on restricted capacity to reprocess and sterilize.

  16. Provides pertinent information regarding all equipment needing service and repair: CS sterilization equipment, surgical instruments and devices. Interacts with manufacturer reps, service technicians and Purchasing to coordinate repairs and service as needed.

  17. Anticipate in advance that all surgical supplies and equipment is available to prevent upcoming surgical procedures. Oversees the start and completion of daily case cart assembly.

  18. Assists CS Supervisors with monitoring and accurately recording arrival and departure times aligned with scheduled hours for each staff member.

  19. Promotes and coaches staff to stay current with hospital information (emails, postings) and educational requirements (Health stream, continuing education credits, etc.)

  20. Participates in CS and OR process improvement initiatives as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School graduate or equivalent

  2. Must work work a minimum of 40 hours a week

  3. Excellent performance history in current job.

  4. Minimum of 5 years of experience

  5. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

  6. Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures, which generally require little or no supervision.

  7. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.

  8. Independence of Action: Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager

  9. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.

  10. Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.

  11. Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.
