General Motors Staff System Engineer– Basic Software Tools in Milford, Michigan

Workplace Status:

Hybrid - This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the candidate is expected to report to the Warren Tech Center three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Team

Join our cutting-edge Embedded Platform team, developing the future of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV). As a Senior Software Developer, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the System and Software tools and processes that power our global software organization. This is your chance to be at the forefront of automotive technology, creating the software infrastructure that will define the next generation of vehicles.

The Role

Staff Systems Engineer in this area is responsible for developing in-house tooling to generate GM's advanced basic infrastructure software for controller builds based on SDV architecture. In this role you will be part of the team that develops, integrates, and tests Java based tool-generated basic software that automates C-code generation of communication stack, ensuring end-to-end readiness in this area - one of the key product lines that enables application software development that uses communication stack. Additionally, this role involves development of strategic roadmaps for SDV tooling. Leading and mentoring software developers in in-house tooling development based on Java. Playing a key role in formalizing tooling process documents and creating training materials.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate cutting-edge software tools (Java and C) for GM's product line

  • Effective use of agile practices, in particular Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery methodologies

  • Specifies and balances system requirements within engineering and IT environments

  • Interface with requirements owner to translate complex requirements into efficient tooling solutions, adhering to AutoSAR standards and serial data communication protocols

  • Conduct needed unit/integration/regression testing, debugging, and validation of generated artifacts on standard platforms

  • Enhance existing code frameworks with new capabilities that meet documented requirements

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify, design, and implement innovative workflowmodifications

  • Lead brainstorming sessions, contributing creative solutions to complex challenges in the area

  • Active participation as an SME  to identity, design, and implement workflow modifications with multiple business teams and application extensions

Additional Job Description

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science preferred)

  • 10 years of experience in automotive embedded software development

  • Expertise in Embedded Java code, background in C.

  • Working knowledge of the AutoSAR Standards and serial data communication protocols

  • Domain knowledge of Standard of Ethernet protocol (e.g.- Service Discovery, E2E, SecOC)

  • Working knowledge of bootloader, memory and communication management

  • Knowledge to design and implement SUM components.

  • Understanding of service-oriented communication protocols (SOME/IP, DDS, REST, etc.)

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 

  • Good business sense, ability to communicate, and a desire to understand customer needs.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-change environment with an initiative demonstrated by reaching beyond assigned work to improve output.

Desired Skills

  • Master’s degree in engineering or computer Science

  • 5+ years of experience in a related field

  • Understanding of Automotive Embedded Systems

  • Working experience with Automotive Communication Stack

  • Demonstrated experience system engineering modelling tools.
