The Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Technician position. The incumbent performs all of the technical tasks required to provide preventive and wellness care for animals. Further, the Veterinary Technician provides support to veterinarians to ensure the quality veterinary care.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Completes appropriate action forms and health records.
Assists veterinary staff with animal procedures such as the collection of biological samples, administration of medications and treatments, and maintenance of records.
Participates in administration of treatments and medications.
Aids staff members in the collection of diagnostic samples from animals.
Oversees the inventory of equipment and supplies and orders items in a timely fashion.
Communicates with clients about unique pet health concerns and offers guidance on options, preventive care, medications, and other treatments.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

High School diploma or equivalent required
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
Department Specific Functions
Candidate will independently manage the day-to-day set-up, conduct, and clean-up of educational courses in Minimally Invasive Surgical Training & Education (MISTE) Center. The incumbent must be facile in a variety of medical simulation modalities (team training, procedural/task training, and cognitive simulation), with a variety of technologies (including box trainers, ex vivo tissue labs, cadaver tissue labs, live animal labs). As this position supports educational activities in multiple surgical specialties - with an ever-evolving array of scenarios - the role requires the ability to quickly understand and adapt the work performed to match the specific learning objectives of the relevant audience.
Provides assistance in anesthesia & monitoring, intubation, surgical positioning and euthanasia to animals during training sessions
Provides assistance in preparation, placement, and positioning of human cadaver specimens during training sessions.
Provides assistance in operating medical simulation technologies during training sessions, troubleshooting as necessary
Plans in advance for supplies and equipment needed for use in training sessions, with a particular emphasis on surgical skills modules
Works with MISTE veterinary technician to maintain inventory of all supplies needed for course and training sessions
Assists MISTE administrator in acquiring cadavers for courses and training sessions
Assists MISTE administrator in communicating with medical device manufactures
Independently and efficiently sets up supplies and equipment needed for simulation scenarios, demonstrating understanding of the nuances and details required for each educational session
Serves as a resource for impromptu and scheduled use of skills lab by surgical residents, procuring and maintaining stock of surgical skills supplies as necessary
Serves as educational resource for individualized practice sessions for surgical residents for deliberate practice – will show how to use equipment, obtain requires supplies, etc.
Supervises and provides feedback to trainees during surgical skills laboratory modules
Coordinates data collection, including attendance data, for surgical education-related research
May assist in development of enhancements to simulation technologies and scenarios
Mentors students and volunteers and excites them about healthcare
Provides expertise on logistical issues during the development of new simulation sessions and/or scenarios
Continually evaluates and improves simulation scenarios and sessions
Assists in housekeeping duties to ensure a safe environment
Assists in the maintenance of instruments by cleaning and tagging for repair
Maintains MISTE in excellent condition coordinating with University of Miami (UM) environmental services when needed.
