The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science invites applicants for a Research Associate II position in Marine Mammal Acoustics. This position is situated at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center, Marine Mammal and Turtle Division located in Miami, Florida. The Division’s Passive Acoustics Ecology Program conducts research in the Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic Ocean, and Caribbean, using innovative passive acoustic technologies to improve assessment and understanding of marine mammals and human-produced sounds that may impact them, to aid in management, monitoring, and conservation efforts.

Candidates for this position must have: 1) a Bachelor’s degree or higher in life sciences, ocean sciences, or a related field; (2) demonstrated bioacoustics experience including collecting, managing, and analyzing large acoustic data sets for marine species, preferably marine mammals; (3) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team; (4) demonstrated technical writing ability; and (5) demonstrated ability to work independently to complete complex tasks. Proficiency in programming in scientific languages, such as Matlab, R, and Python, is a plus. Experience preparing and deploying oceanographic instrumentation on moorings is preferred. The Marine Mammal Acoustician will assist in collection and analysis of acoustic data recordings to detect North Atlantic right whale calls and sounds from other marine mammals and human noise sources. The successful applicant will participate in fieldwork to deploy acoustic recorders, organize fieldwork logistics, conduct QA/QC on data recordings, run and validate automated detectors, extract detection information, conduct statistical analyses of occurrence, write reports when needed, and disseminate data via scientific publications and presentations at conferences.
