Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lactation Consultant is a health care professional who through study and supervised practice has become an expert in the support and advocacy of breastfeeding and lactating families. The Lactation Consultant functions autonomously and in collaboration with health care providers to provide appropriate care and education to families in childbearing years. The Lactation Consultant is responsible for the overall coordination, planning and management of patient, family and staff education related to breastfeeding. The age of the population served included young adult/adult as well as select pediatric (neonatal/infant) patients. One year of experience as an RN is preferred and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is required. If not an RN, the Lactation Consultant should have five years experience as an IBCLC.

What you will do in this role:

  • You will assess patient lactation needs.

  • You will implement a care plan to ensure adequate infant nutrition.

  • Collaborate with other healthcare team members to provide patient, staff and community education and support.

  • You will instruct patients and families regarding lactation.

  • You will maintain and review patients’ records including posting tests and examination results.

  • You will administer medications in accordance with physician orders.

Requirements:

  • Must be licensed as a Florida Registered Nurse in accordance with state regulations or appropriate compact licensure. If compact license held, active FL RN license required within 60 days of hire.

  • Nursing Diploma or ASN required; BSN preferred.

  • Certification as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in lactation consulting required; previous nursing experience with mother-child preferred.

  • Current American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.

  • Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, ability to follow verbal instructions, PC skills

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date

  • Intl Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

HCA Florida Mercy Hospital is a 488-bed facility. We are accredited by the Joint Commission and offer a wide range of medical specialties. These specialties include emergency care, heart, and vascular care. We are designated by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. Other specialties include maternity and neonatal care.
