Responsibilities

The Nevada National Security Site is actively looking for Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our Device Assembly Facility (DAF). The DAF is a Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility located within the Forward Areas of the Nevada National Security Site. The DAF plays an integral part in supporting NNSA subcritical experiments, nuclear material management, stockpile surveillance and the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). This position reports to the DAF Engineering Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining overall cognizance of assigned mechanical facility systems, providing cognizant system engineering (CSE) and design authority (DA) support for operations and maintenance, and technical support of line management safety responsibilities for ensuring continued system operational readiness.

  • Validate physical configuration of assigned mechanical systems. Maintain and update system documents for Configuration Management (CM). Understand the functions and performance criteria for assigned systems per the Safety Basis, and act as the subject matter expert for assigned systems.

  • Conduct the In-service-Inspection and Technical Surveillance Requirement execution of assigned systems.

  • Identify and help implement technical requirements for the maintenance of mechanical systems, structures and components.

  • Perform assessments of assigned systems and reports system health status to management.

  • Contribute to solutions of assignment-related complex problems using a well-defined set of technologies. Solutions use established basic standards, practices and procedures as well as technical knowledge to address problems and complete tasks.

  • Lead the development of designs, strategies, reports and technical proposals.

  • Perform design and technical analysis activities using prescribed codes and standards, computer software, and generally accepted best management practices.

  • Define specifications for procurements and initiate purchase requests.

  • Work with outside vendors as required obtaining relevant information.

  • Exhibit knowledge of codes and standards of other disciplines.

  • Coordinate work within their discipline on complex projects.

  • Often serves as a leader of work teams.

  • Monitor work of and provide guidance to skilled technicians and other support personnel.

  • Accept individual responsibility and accountability for environment, safety, health, and quality processes within personal control, personal safety, and the safety of co-workers.

  • Comply with established regulations and procedures for environment, safety, health, and quality and perform duties in a way that will not cause personal danger, endanger other individuals, or violate environment, safety, health, and quality regulations.

  • Promptly correct or report any hazard or potential hazard to supervision.

  • Understand the principles associated with the MSTS safety concept.

  • Participate in and embrace MSTS environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.

  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;

  • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering

  • Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)

  • Or Professional Engineer license.

  • Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience.Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.

  • Preferred candidate will be qualified as a Cognizant System Engineer as defined in DOE Order 420.1C, “Facility Safety,” with the ability to qualify rapidly as a Design Authority.

  • Preferred candidate will be qualified to develop Commercial Grade Dedications.

  • Demonstrated desire to learn and innovate.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and procedures.

  • Knowledge of instrumentation & control, hoists, fire protection, electrical, mechanical or electromechanical components.

  • Should be self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Ideally, the applicant will have strong time-management skills. Be well organized, maintain safe work habits and have a broad range of technical interests and education.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and technical documents.

  • Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain HRP certification.

  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada)

  • Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday. (subject to change)

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age.     Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 (http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=14b1c770db022992d237769fbe9fc519&mc=true&node=se10.4.707_14&rgn=div8) , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required.     Annual salary range for this position is:$97,011.20 - $145,516.80.

    Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
