POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Linac Coherent Light Source-II High Energy Project is an upgrade to the continuous-wave (CW) superconducting electron linear accelerator and hard x-ray free electron laser (FEL) now under construction at SLAC. This project will double the electron energy of the accelerator from 4 to 8 GeV which will extend the tuning range of the FEL from 5 to 20 keV. The project will also enhance the LCLS hard x-ray instrumentation suite to make use of the enhanced tuning range of the FEL.

The LCLS-II-HE Project has an employment opportunity for a Project Engineer with substantial construction and project management background to provide technical, cost and schedule oversight for installation activities within Accelerator Systems. The position reports to the Accelerator Systems Manager and carries responsibility and authority for planning and coordination of activities within the Accelerator Systems to ensure the project’s mission and program are met in terms of technical scope, cost, schedule and resources.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options, with regular on-site work required during installation periods.

Specific Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Serve as the Project Engineer for Accelerator Systems. Achieve goals through technical and managerial staff engaged in developing, advancing, and applying science, engineering and technology to meet the needs of the project.

  • Optimize and manage installation activities with respect to scope, cost and schedule including procurement and vendor management as well as installation planning and coordination.

  • Ensure technical specifications and procedures are developed in accordance with SLAC processes that successfully achieve project objectives.

  • Ensure work performed at SLAC by contractors and vendors meet quality and safety standards.

  • Participate in the planning of systems integration, installation and check-out of Accelerator Systems components.

  • Participate in the project risk management process. Ensure system risks are identified, mitigated (where applicable), managed, and dispositioned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field plus five years of relevant experience in accelerator design, operation or project management.

  • Strong analytical and computational skills necessary to gather, organize and make well informed decisions.

  • Strong communication skills to communicate with and lead diverse teams effectively.

  • Experienced people leader, including leading in a multi-laboratory and matrixed environments.

  • Experience working in an environment dedicated to quality, safety and customer service.

  • Experience with software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Power Point and P6.

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

  • Flexibility to travel and work off normal hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree or PhD in engineering, physics or a related field

  • Experience with earned value management (EVMS) and DOE 413.b projects

  • Understanding of high power RF and cryomodule components and operation

Physical Requirements *:

  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation and perform desk-based computer tasks, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh to ten pounds.

  • Frequently stand for extended periods and walk moderate distances while overseeing, inspecting and working in the accelerator gallery and housing.

  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb, twist, bend, stoop, squat, reach or work above shoulders, sort, file paperwork or parts, operate foot and hand controls.

The expected pay range for this position is $143,000 to $177,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
