Health First Histology/Cytology Support Tech - Pathology in Melbourne, Florida

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by working as a team to maintain responsible attitudes, performing accurate and timely processing of specimens. o Ensures optimal support of laboratory testing activities through timely and accurate specimen processing o Receives and processes inpatient/outpatient specimens consistent with test requirements and specimen stability limits. o Processes customer requests (with the understanding that patients, visitors, hospital staff, physicians and fellow co-workers are all our customers) and resolves customer issues in a friendly, courteous, professional and timely manner o Uses all resources in the most efficient manner o Assists with autopsy procedures

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Quality/No Harm:

  • Maintains a clean and safe work area.
  • Assures valid patient results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures.
  • Complies with policies/processes/procedures to provide accurate results, quality products and services with < 2 errors per year.
  • Understands and applies quality control and equipment quality control per department policy as measured by review of QC logs with < 5 errors per year.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all required specimens are collected and no omission errors or inadequate specimen result.
  • Uses care in performance of duties to avoid clerical errors at the points of registration or test order form Reference Lab requisitions (errors: tests ordered under wrong account, facility, physician);as applicable.
  • Ensures the correct procedures are performed on the correct patient by verifying two forms of patient identification.
  • Reports all malfunctioning equipment (i.e. telephones, PC’s, printers, etc.) to the IT or Biomed departments fellow associates and management.
  • Completes specified jobs/tasks by deadline and/or provides requested information in a timely and concise manner.
  • Knowledge regarding location of emergency equipment/supplies and how to use such equipment/supplies.
  • Familiar with the Health First Kardex and responsibilities in relation to specified emergent codes.
  • Responsible for hurricane preparedness and their particular responsibilities as a Health First associate.
  • Knowledge of specimen collection requirements and provides accurate and timely laboratory expertise.
  • All specimens are documented with the correct patient information.
  • Demonstrates the appropriate skill sets as determined by the annual competency assessments.
  • Ability to perform basic computer skills pertinent to job performance.
  • Monitors and complies with Joint Commission/CAP standard and performs all job functions in accordance with state and regional requirements to ensure compliance to these standards.
  • Offers suggestions for improvement within the department; implements or revises section protocols and/or department policies and procedures.

Stewardship:

  • Manages daily workload in a productive manner.
  • Ensures all specimen requests contain accurate information (specific exam requested matches order/requisition, correct ordering physician, appropriate medical necessity/diagnosis, etc.) or cancels incorrect test and reorders accurate test; as applicable.
  • Availability to meet department staffing demands (i.e. coverage for illness and/or emergencies, reduced operations) per department expectations.
  • Utilizes supplies/equipment in a proficient and cost effective manner when performing various procedures.
  • Completes all required documentation and/or required forms.
  • Completes all annual mandatory items including input regarding Annual Performance Review.
  • Willingly assists in other areas of the department, hospital and/or participates in activities as a Health First representative when needed.
  • Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in workflow and processes.
  • Accepts additional responsibilities to assist with workload or to facilitate departmental goals/initiatives (i.e., voluntarily works additional hours, assists management with necessary workflow, process changes, data collection endeavors, etc.)
  • Reports to workstation at scheduled time and follows break and lunch policies.
  • Accepts changes to the schedule or workflow based on patient volumes.

Customer Experience:

  • Complies with "I CARE" values measured by no disciplinary action per Human Resources Pol 4.01.
  • Provide courteous and professional communication to customers/coworkers at all times.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information in all situations.
  • Ensures that the department and equipment is stocked and cleaned and ready for the pathologists/PA’s.
  • Communicates customer experiences to the laboratory management in a timely manner.
  • Mentors co-workers and students technical development.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be willing and able to work with biohazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong background and knowledge in use of personal computers and document scanning.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and telephone etiquette skills.
  • Must be able to cover alternative shifts when requested by manager.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of anatomical medical terminology preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to perform clinical/technical tasks.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods (2-3 hours.)
  • Must be able to lift 10-20 lbs. unassisted. (Use buddy lifting for anything heavier)
  • Must be able to sit and operate a computer.
  • Ability to adapt to a combination of sitting, walking, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting throughout the shift.
  • Willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines.
