Idaho Department of Labor Farm Equipment Mechanic in Melba, Idaho

Mechanic Duties will include: maintain, repair, service, and overhaul farm vehicles, trucks and machinery such as wheel loaders, tractors, tillage implement/planting/harvesting equipment and other implements; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; repair or replace defective parts using hand tools, milling and woodworking machines, lathes, welding equipment, grinders or saws; inspect mechanical equipment to locate damage, defects or wear; read inspection reports; tune or overhaul engines; clean/lubricate/adjust equipment, parts, and tools; adjust vehicle components according to specifications; disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair; repair defective engines or engine components and worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts; replace motors; fabricate parts, components or new metal parts using drill presses, engine lathes, welding torches and other machine tools (grinders or grinding torches); replace and pack bearings; replace and re-lace belting; repair bent or torn sheet metal; service vehicles to maintain functionality; remove tires; repair axles; repair and replace trailer tarps; test and replace electrical circuits, components, wiring and mechanical equipment using test meters, soldering equipment and hand tools; reassemble machines and equipment following repair, testing operation and/or adjustment; install machine or

equipment replacement parts; move large objects using heavy equipment; drive trucks to haul tools and equipment for onsite repair of large machinery; read work orders or descriptions of problems to determine repairs or modifications needed; maintain detailed repair or maintenance records; perform general cleanup of farm maintenance and repair areas and a clean rock/weed free work area; trouble-shoot and repair electrical maintenance issues with a variety of equipment used in the production of agricultural commodities (this will involve single and three phase systems that operate at 480 volts or less); repair electric water pumps, system controls, motors and/or other mechanisms relative to proper irrigation of crops; assure proper pump operation; winterize irrigation equipment; maintain and/or repair wiring systems relative to all equipment used in the planting, sorting/handling, harvesting, and packing/storage of agricultural commodities; maintain and update a complete inventory of parts necessary for all production maintenance projects; assure mobile repair vehicles contain adequate parts to allow for normal daily breakdowns; collaborate and communicate with supervisors as to optimal and most efficient scheduling and completion of maintenance and repairs; intermittently perform miscellaneous incidental duties related to general farm work and general cleanup of farm

property in the areas around all maintenance and repair locations which may include maintenance of fencing, gates and miscellaneous welding needs.

Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of alfalfa, cereal grains, corn, corn silage, and beef cattle.

The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm work/irrigation/crop production.

General Farm Work will include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach, and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; may mix and/ r spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm grounds; remove rocks from field; paint/repair/maintain farm structures; maintain/repair fencing; perform general cleanup of farm areas; transport crops from field to storage and/or to market; drive, load/unload farm trucks and Ag exempt, non CDL semi/10-wheel trucks; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; workers possessing the proper licensure may be asked to transport other farm workers.

Irrigation duties will include the following:

Hand lines: connect pipes; check alignment of pipe and adjust for proper water distribution; attach lines to water supply; turn on pump; turn valves to start flow of water; disassemble lines and carry pipes across fields at specified intervals; move pipes through freshly irrigated crops and/or plowed fields where mud may be deep at times; lift and carry pipe sections weighing approximately 40 pounds on a sustained basis.

Wheel lines: start gasoline engines and operate controls to move lines across fields at specified intervals.

Flood Irrigation: lift gate in side of flooded irrigation ditch/pipe permitting water to flow into bordered section of field; shovel and pack dirt in low spots of embankment or cut trenches in high areas to direct water flow; close gate in ditch/pipe when bordered section is flooded; open gate or connect pipe to underground pipe system that releases water flow into reserv
