Department Summary:

As a Cybersecurity Software Engineer with the MITRE Security Automation Framework (SAF) Team, you will enjoy a cooperative environment where you will work closely with secure coding and DevOps experts in an organization that encourages and values collaboration, mentoring, and continuous learning. MITRE is a thought leader in security automation, dedicated to establishing and promoting best practices and standards for industry and government. This MITRE team works across government and industry to develop re-usable content and tools to automate security processes that enable rapid software development (see https://saf.mitre.org).

Roles & Responsibilities:

You will leverage and grow your hands-on skills with software design and development, engaging in the full software engineering lifecycle using modern technologies with an emphasis on cybersecurity. You will gain experience with one or more of the following:

  • Thought-leading Cybersecurity and DevSecOps

  • Full-Stack Development

  • Security Automation of Applications, Systems, and Architectures

  • Data Analysis and Visualization

  • Container Security

  • Cloud Engineering

You will provide thought leadership and problem solving for government customers in collaboration with commercial stakeholders. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Design and architect applications

  • Communicate SAF core concepts to sponsoring organizations

  • Relay sponsor requirements to the SAF core team

  • Balance competing requirements to deliver solutions to various organizations (tradeoffs between time, cost, benefit, and staff availability)

  • Coach staff and mentor junior members

  • Develop technical proposals for sponsoring organizations to integrate SAF into their development and deployment workflows

  • Serve as a subject matter expert that is aware of industry trends and best practices and applies them consistently across projects

  • Lead cross-functional teams to design, build, and deploy automated systems that meet specific business needs

Basic Qualifications:

  • A college degree in a technical discipline (including but not limited to Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, etc.)

  • 10 years related experience

  • Must have DoD Secret clearance (or higher) for consideration

  • Hands-on experience with architecting and automating cloud native technologies

  • Experience provisioning IT systems with Infrastructure as Code or Infrastructure as a Service (e.g., Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Terraform and/or Docker)

  • Experience deploying self-managed software applications and tools in customer environments.

  • Professional experience in software development process, tools and languages like Python, Ruby, Go, Java, MySQL, MongoDB, Git

  • Hands-on experience with building and managing CI/CD workflows and tools

  • Experience performing code reviews

  • Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

  • Strong ability to communicate core DevOps concepts (CI/CD, Agile, automation)

  • High level desire to help our nation solve its most critical challenges

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies

  • Understanding of scalable computing systems, software architecture, data structures, design patterns and algorithms

  • Knowledge of software design patterns

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
