The Technical Analysis Department (N923), within MITRE’s Intelligence Center, seeks a Lead Microelectronics Engineer to provide the vision and strategy for applying microelectronics and semiconductor technology at MITRE to create solutions for a safer world. 

The Lead Engineer will be a technical leader supporting a US Government (USG) joint program office overseeing the investment into secure design and manufacturing of microelectronics for the USG, critical US infrastructure, and other systems of national importance. 

Department Summary:

The Technical Analysis Department combines deep technical expertise and operational knowledge to provide unique insights and solutions to the most challenging problems facing the US Intelligence Community and DoD. The department is reorganizing from three to four mission-focused groups: Space and Counterspace (SCS), Exploitation & Data Analysis (E&DA), Science & Technology (S&T), and Adversary Technical Intelligence (ATI). This position will lead the S&T group but can work across these mission areas.

Job Responsibilities:

This position will work across MITRE projects, the USG, academia, and industrial partners in driving the development and adoption of microelectronics and semiconductor technologies and security measures to protect USG programs.  The Principal Engineer will be a technical leader responsible for advising a USG joint program office overseeing the investment into secure design and manufacturing of microelectronics for the USG, critical US infrastructure, and other systems of national importance. This position will also identify risks and opportunities and provide technical analysis to acquisition review boards and program reviews.

Candidates should have strong technical background and research experience in electronics hardware design, prototyping, production, semiconductors, anti-tamper and reverse engineering, and embedded systems design and security. Candidates should also have demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills and experience engaging with national security and defense partners and commercial developers and manufacturers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • This requisition requires the candidate to have a Top Secret/SCI security clearance with polygraph and the ability to support a government Sponsor on-site and from MITRE McLean.

  • Experience with design and/or manufacturing of microelectronics

  • Experience developing strategies, roadmaps, and analysis of anticipated and achieved technical parameters of microelectronic systems

  • Experience with trusted foundry program

  • Knowledge of the DOD and IC and program offices

  • Ability to work with customers to understand their use cases and formulate a path forward, requires excellent oral and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to build consensus and partnerships across industry, academia, and government to promote and advance the state of the art in microelectronics systems and security to address issues of national impact

  • Expertise in the design of microelectronic components and systems, including digital design, FPGA design, and embedded software architecture and development

  • Experience identifying and applying emerging technologies to USG PoR

  • Experience fostering an environment and culture of innovation, technical leadership, collaboration, camaraderie, and technical quality

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Domain-specific expertise and/or related education in electronic warfare applications

  • M.S. or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

  • Experience with secure design and manufacturing of ASICs, commercial programmable SoCs, and FPGAs

  • Strong writing and editing skills including demonstrated ability to articulate complex topics to sponsors and staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in collaborative and dynamic environments that foster innovation in areas that provide enhanced capabilities to MITRE’s sponsors and that result in significant operational benefit to the Nation.
