Department Summary:

MITRE’s R115 Network Engineering team is currently seeking a Lead Network Engineer to create and deliver engineering design and implementation plans for the MITRE enterprise level network. The primary focus for this position is to design, implement, and sustain solutions and evolution for our public, private, and hybrid cloud network infrastructure that supports SaaS based applications. This individual will bridge the gap between traditional enterprise networking and public/private cloud solutions. Engineering designs must be flexible and scalable to support the network services for both on premises and cloud-based services. This is a great opportunity to work in a team environment where you will be part of the engineering group that supports both our corporate enterprise infrastructure and enables sponsor-facing projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design integrated network solutions that take into account cloud based and on-premise environments for a dynamic environment that needs to ensure proper security controls are implemented and maintained

  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of networking to include routing, switching, Authorization and Authentication, DNS/DHCP.

  • Experience with Cisco ISE infrastructure, DR and policy configuration

  • Excellent ability to collaborate with other IT disciplines (e.g. Storage, Platform, Application) to troubleshoot and resolve complex problems within a system of systems.

  • Create detailed, comprehensive, and well-structured ConOps, test plans and test cases.

  • Drive enhancements through full life-cycle from concept to final implementation and support

  • Participate in disaster recovery development, exercises, and actual events.

  • Collaborate with staff to support quality and maintainable systems.

  • Contribute directly to the technical work of one or more projects.

  • Participate in 24x7 oncall rotation and assist in resolving issues outside normal business hours.

  • Maintain systems and documentation as needed for audits and compliance.

  • Strong desire to keep technical skills current and remain abreast of emerging technologies.

  • Keep abreast of industry white papers & informed of industry direction and best practices.

  • Capable of lifting 20 lbs. and being on-site 2-3 days a week.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • 5+ years of experience with networking technologies and core Internet protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, wireless, and distributed networks)

  • Experience designing, implementing, and sustaining network solutions for cloud environments through an integrated design approach. (Azure, AWS preferred cloud service technologies)

  • Knowledge or understanding of:

  • Cloud technologies and services

  • Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology

  • Cisco ISE

  • Infoblox

  • Application Programming Interface (APIs) and API Gateways

  • Proactive, independent problem-solver who likes to be challenged, continuously learning

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with remote teams

  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, written and verbal communication skills

  • Obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Cisco, Juniper, Security+ certifications preferred

  • Experience working and integrating open-source frameworks/products as well as deploying open-source packages and/or application stacks into environment with multi-core, multithreaded, and distributed systems

  • Experience with Configuration Management tools (i.e. Ansible, Puppet, Chef)

  • Software-Defined Network (SDN) and Software-Defined WAN (SDWAN) deployment experience
