Department Summary:

MITRE’s Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Innovation Center (https://www.mitre.org/our-impact/mitre-labs/artificial-intelligence-and-autonomy-innovation-center) (AIA IC) is home to an interdisciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team united by a passion to catalyze consequential use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are 200 strong and growing! We collaboratively work across government, industry, and academia to address complex AI and Autonomy challenges for the benefit of our nation. We apply our trusted technical expertise to enable the effective, assured, and responsible application of Artificial Intelligence to critical government missions. We aim to realize the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence for public good.

We are looking for a Department Manager to strategically shape and lead our Robotics and Autonomous Systems department. The Department Manager will be responsible for setting the technical direction of the department's capabilities, growing a team of world-class talent, supporting development of new opportunities, and building collaborative relationships across MITRE, our sponsors, industry, and academia. The ideal candidate understands the capabilities and limitations of cutting-edge autonomy technologies, as well as emerging sponsor challenges to help us achieve national impact.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing the department’s strategy, in alignment with all relevant MITRE strategies.

  • Developing trusted working relationships with MITRE stakeholders and sponsors.

  • Advancing the department’s technical capabilities and translating those capabilities into service offerings.

  • Partnering with work programs to shape, grow, and staff impactful work.

  • Promoting the department and its technical capabilities with MITRE stakeholders and sponsors.

  • Hiring, developing, and retaining world-class staff with expertise in trustworthy and secure AI.

  • Mentoring and fostering a culture of innovation within the department.

  • Identifying and pursuing opportunities to increase the inclusion and diversity of the department's work and staff.

  • Developing the next generation of leadership – thought leaders, project leaders, and people leaders – in robotics and autonomous systems.

  • Ensuring the fairness of performance and compensation management processes of the department.

  • Ensuring the technical quality and integrity of department’s work products.

  • Managing the department’s budget and resources.

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 12 years of work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience relevant to robotics and autonomous systems.

  • Comprehensive understanding of state of the art and best practices in core autonomy focus areas, including autonomous behaviors and coordination, sensing and perception, trustworthy autonomy, and autonomy strategy and policy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate challenging technical concepts to both untrained and expert audiences.

  • Can-do, hands-on attitude, and history of entrepreneurial success.

  • Demonstrated ability to build collaboration across organizational units and external partnerships.

  • Track record of successfully managing a team of at least eight technical staff.

  • Experience in hiring top-notch technical staff.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI clearance within one year of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 15 years of work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience relevant to robotics and autonomous systems.

  • World-class technical expertise and recognition in robotics and autonomous systems.

  • Ability to create, articulate, and motivate transformative concepts and outcomes and achieve practical outcomes in complex operational environments.

  • Demonstrated expertise in broad areas of embodied artificial intelligence applications spanning across civil sectors and national security missions.

  • Demonstrated track record in building strong internal and external partnerships and bringing them to bear in creating new business opportunities.
