Scope of Job
Responsible for working closely with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals within the UTRGV Health Cancer Center assisting in various pharmacy tasks to ensure and support the highest standards of patient care and ensure compliance with safety protocols at all times.
Description of Duties
Accurately and safely prepares, packages, and dispenses medications.
Performs prescription verification and reviews for completeness and accuracy.
Ensures timely delivery of medications to patients and healthcare providers.
Monitors and maintains inventory levels of pharmaceuticals and supplies.
Assists with ordering, receiving, and restocking medications and supplies.
Manages drug recalls and expired medication disposal processes.
Provides excellent customer service to patients, nursing staff and oncologists answering questions and addressing concerns.
Processes third party billing claims and assists with securing patient assistance.
Collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure optimal medication therapy outcomes.
Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to all HIPAA regulations.
Participates in quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance.
Performs routine inspections and documentation to meet accreditation standards.
Assists in medication error reporting and investigations.
Ensures compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations.
Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
Promotes a culture of safety and adherence to all safety protocols.
Participates in related pharmacy trainings and testing to stay current with rules and regulations governing oncology practice.
Follows all safety and biohazard procedures in the disposal of medical waste.
Files and maintains prescription records.
Stays current with developments in oncology pharmacy practice.
Assists in the compounding of specialized oncology medications.
Supports research initiatives within the cancer center pharmacy.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent, to include 20 hours of IV Training accredited by the ACPE .
Preferred Education
Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program.
Licenses/Certifications
Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy ( TSBP ).
Preferred:National Certification (CPhT).
Required Experience
Two (2) years of experience as a pharmacy technician in an oncology or hospital setting. Experience in the preparations of both hazardous and non-hazardous sterile preps.
Preferred Experience
Experience as a pharmacy technician in a retail setting.
Experience in processing third party billing claims and preparing prescriptions for dispensing.
Equipment
Use of standard pharmacy/office equipment. Knowledge in the operation of pharmacy equipment such as: Dolly, Pyxis Machine, Biological Safety Cabinet, and Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exposure to hazardous medications, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The job location will shift from the Harlingen Institute of Neuroscience to the UTRGV Cancer Center in McAllen once completed.
