Job Description Summary

The Human Factors Analysis Principal Engineer demonstrates accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives in Human Factors Engineering (HFE), with a focus and concentration on the HFE technical elements associated with analysis activities in the scope of HFE. This position develops, integrates, and guides HFE analysis processes that meet business needs across the organization including long-term planning and overall strategy as well as managing the complex HFE issues associated with corporate and regulatory requirements compliance to provide high-quality, human-centric capabilities in nuclear plants.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, evaluate, and introduce engineering solutions to meet near-term and long-range engineering needs regarding operating experience dispensation, analyses of functions, tasks, safety and hazards, safety cases regarding human actions, staffing and training challenges throughout the nuclear plant.

  • Leads the technical team responsible for the HFE analysis activities including (but not limited to) Operating Experience, Allocation of Function, Task Analysis, Safety Analysis Staffing Analysis, and Licensing support, with secondary responsibilities to conjoined design activities in Human-System Interface Design, Procedure Development, Design Implementation, and Verification & Validation.

  • Provide technical consultation on task support requirements, the design or modification of tasks, and levels of automation based on human characteristics, capabilities, and limitations.

  • Lead and provide the key technical direction to large projects with critical business impact extending from understanding of existing and projected business capabilities and priorities.

  • Maintain an active role in developing and defining the state of the art in HFE analysis tools and methods in order to anticipate, apply, adapt or develop technologies for product introduction, quality, performance, cost improvements and problem resolution in meeting current and future business needs including adherence to schedules and estimated costs.

  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation, and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, documentation and letters with clarity, tact, and professionalism.

  • Enable and sustain technical quality and consistency across multiple projects, regulatory requirements, and standards.

  • Highly skilled in problem-solving, conflict resolution, sensitive customer interactions, coordinating teamwork and leadership.

  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company.

  • Provide technical guidance, direction, mentoring and training to new and experienced human factors engineers.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and abroad to customer plants, standards meetings, industry conferences and other business critical technical events.

  • Works closely with the Consulting Engineer in human factors engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent 4-year degree in a related technical discipline.

  • At least 8 additional years of experience in an engineering capacity

  • Minimum 15 years of human factors experience in a high-hazard, safety-centric industry (e.g., energy, aviation, medical, automotive) with at least 5 years in the nuclear industry.

Eligibility Requirements

  • This position will require 2 days onsite a week in Markham, ON.

Desired Characteristics

  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering or equivalent.

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the United States or Canada.

  • Experience with nuclear operations as a licensed/certified reactor operator is desirable.
