Position Title: Bus Rider

Department: Transportation

Immediate Supervisor: Transportation Manager

Summary:

Oversees students (general and special education) during scheduled routes to and/or from special excursions; enforces rules, regulations, and laws to maintain safety during transport and ensures the safety of special education students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Complies with District's discipline policy.

  • Assists Bus Driver in maintaining order and discipline on the (entire) bus for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students on the school bus.

  • Assists special education students for the purpose of providing for special needs during transport, safe ingress and egress from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.

  • Instructs special education students and other passengers for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and maintaining safety.

  • Lifts students and/or equipment for the purpose of positioning or repositioning students as appropriate.

  • Assists special education transported students with getting on and off the bus safely at the designated bus stop which may include locking wheelchairs, securing seat belts, etc.

  • Assists children across streets or highways.

  • Monitors student behavior (on the entire bus) for the purpose of diffusing situations and/or preventing distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other passengers.

  • Secures students and/or equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, car seats, restraints, seat belts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.

  • Moves about the bus while the bus is in motion, assisting passengers and attending to disciplinary issues.

  • Assists the driver in preparing emergency evacuation plans and in performing semi-annual evacuation drills.

  • Prepares written materials (e.g. incident reports, student count, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.

  • Assesses potential emergency situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well being of passengers.

  • Assists Bus Driver in cleaning/sanitizing the interior of buses for the purpose of ensuring a safe and sanitary environment.

  • Participates in required District training.

  • Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance.

  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises up to 84 students while they are being transported on school bus.

Minimum Education or Experience

High school graduate or GED

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. There is significant use of fine finger dexterity. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials and manipulating things. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee frequently must perform physical activities that require squatting, stooping or kneeling, crawling, lifting, balancing, and reaching. The employee will occasionally bend or twist at the neck and waist while performing the duties of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. The employee will sometimes push/pull items. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a vehicle and will occasionally work outdoors. Work may be performed during inclement weather, with exposure to extreme temperatures and conditions including snow and ice. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
