The Applications Engineer (AE) effectively manages moderately complex application customer projects that could include Injection Molding (IM), CNC Machining, or 3D Printing projects by providing technical expertise in support of selling and retaining Protolabs' services. This position is responsible for thorough review and evaluation of customer supplied 3D CAD data and RFQ' s. The AE also provides general review for Statements of Work and quality documents, while requiring selective coordination with technical operations, process engineering, contracts, production, and quality departments to manage risk. The AE provides technical expertise to sales and external customers regarding process capabilities and limitations and serves as a technical consultant during virtual and face-to-face customer interactions (i.e. conference calls/webinars, local tradeshows and local customer site visits). Additionally, the AE will coordinate with marketing and provide technical information for Protolabs services. Some local travel may be required. You will: Maintain strong customer service support by answering customer phone calls, emails, and chat. Provide pre-sale consultative design support including webinars, design reviews, and plant tours for Tier 2 & 3 (projects) customers. Work with Tier 2 & 3 (projects) customers for tours, lunch & learns, and local customer visits. Maintain 4 hour responsiveness guidelines set on all customer (internal and external) communications. Gain a solid understanding of the customer's technical requirements and ability to make design changes and communicate appropriate solutions. Evaluate customer requirements to best manage expectations and risks for moderately complex projects and geometries. Thoroughly review and evaluate customer supplied 3D CAD data, RFQ's, Statements of Work, drawings, and quality documents to verify technical compliance. Coordinates with technical operations, contracts, quality and process engineering departments to manage moderately complex projects with non-standard customer requirements. Provide technical guidance to sales and Tier 2 & 3 (projects) customers regarding process capabilities and limitations. Serve as primary technical resource on a project basis. Travels to local tradeshows and customer site visits as a technical expert for one or more of the services offered (Injection Molding, CNC Machining, 3D Printing). Assist the customer in working through recommended or required changes to their 3D CAD model to help them take advantage of Protolabs' value. Balance the objective of satisfying the customer requests with the potential of downstream risks to deliver acceptable parts on schedule. Effectively uses all work instructions and associa ed documentation when evaluating customer quotes. Provide basic on-boarding training to new AE employees. Utilize thorough understanding of AE responsibilities to participate in Kaizen and Value Stream Mapping events, and other inter-departmental process discussions. Contribute to marketing activities as a technical resource. Performs other duties as assigned You have: 4+ years' of experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related technical focus or equivalent work experience. Injection molding or CNC processes is preferred. 4+ years' in a directly related customer facing experience role with the responsibility of problem solving and leading projects. 3+ years' experience managing projects with high requirements & high complexity. Excellent technical aptitude with ability to communicate technical information to others at various levels Solid understanding of Knowledge of CAD modeling programs and ability to visualize 3-Dimensional parts based on CAD data. Ability to manage medium size projects with moderate complexity required Experience with a Windows computing environment as well as the ability to learn custom software packages. Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast paced environment. Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and strong negotiation skills Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain a cordial and professional demeanor when working with customers, other departments and team members. Strong communication skills including, listening, speaking, writing and making presentations Strong computer skills (MS Office applications), including experience with a CRM software. Responsive, proactive and a self-starter with strong coaching and mentoring skills Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to build rapport and customer trust Ability to work independently and in a team environment and proven ability to get positive results from a high performance team. Excellent customer relationship management skills, including the ability to successfully deal with escalations Strong sense of urgency, attention to detail and ability to be highly responsive. Demonstrated ability to work within Proto Labs values of Teamwork, Achievement and Trust.
