Vanguard Investment Management Fintech Strategies Data Scientist in Malvern, Pennsylvania

The Data Scientist supports Investment Management businesses (Fixed Income, Index Equities, Quantitative Equities, Risk Management, and Investment Strategy) and their strategic imperatives by creating, experimenting, and implementing IMG’s global analytics and financial technologies priorities. The role acts as an advocate for emerging data strategies and financial technology solutions.

Background: Investment Management Fintech Strategies (IMFS) is a global team headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania. IMFS serves to actively explore new technologies in ways that could dramatically improve the Vanguard’s investment performance, make capital markets work better for our investors, and embed a culture of innovation throughout Vanguard. This team seeks out internal and external partners and prospects all aspects of technology for ways to experiment and disrupt securities investing across all asset classes. We focus on data strategies including new sources of data and advanced analytics capabilities including machine learning and artificial intelligence; platform and visualization strategies; and market structure strategies.

Job Description Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and develop predictive analytic capabilities to support Vanguard IMG (Investment Management Group)

  • Use statistical and AI/machine learning applications to uncover insights in the investment landscape

  • Identify and implement new data strategies and modeling capabilities to build products serving IMG Portfolio Managers and Traders Proactively explore and introduce innovative approaches and emerging technologies

  • Collaborate with data engineers to aid in development of process and data architecture, data treatment, and normalization

  • Communicate complex ideas and solutions effectively to IMG stakeholders through presentations, data visualizations, demos and receive buy-in

  • Develops understanding of Vanguard’s investment management processes across businesses and regions, as well as data and data structures underpinning those activities.

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other areas of Vanguard. Anticipates and coordinates business requirements that drive analytics implementation.

  • Develops and maintains knowledge of financial markets, securities, and general investment themes, and new technologies in order to bring an informed perspective to current financial technology landscape.

  • Continually grows and develops understanding of AI and machine learning applications.

Qualifications

· Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Degree in a quantitative discipline preferred.

· Strong desire to gain superior knowledge of investments (i.e., equities, fixed income, alternative investment strategies, etc.)

· Ability to work with large data sets, both structured and unstructured, and emerging data sources.

· Ability to deal with competing priorities and exacting expectations.

· Exceptional conceptual, analytical, and problem solving skills, proven ability to build/execute on ideas.

· Must be able to work in a collaborative and occasionally fast paced/high pressure environment.

· Self-starter, motivated, independent, curious, versatile team player.

· Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to think strategically.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and professional presence.

· Ability to easily convey complex information between the business and Information Technology.

· Proven experience working in a flexible, fast-paced environment. Ability to manage multiple priorities and multiple small projects simultaneously.

· Ability to work independently with minimal or no direction.
