We act as a communications bridge between patients, families, and medical staff, and we inform doctors of relevant cultural issues to help them deliver culturally responsive patient care.
Job Summary:
The Medical Interpreter provides interpreting services for non-English speaking patients, families, and community members, as well as providers and staff at Cambridge Health Alliance. The Interpreter advocates for non-English speaking patients’ access to the full range of health care services which are available to English speaking patients and provides intercultural mediation to assist providers in delivering culturally sensitive patient care. A commitment to patient safety, customer satisfaction, efficient and effective use of resources, teamwork, innovation, and performance improvement is required.
Qualifications:
Bachelor degree preferred. High School diploma or GED required.
Graduate of an interpreter educational program required (minimum 40 hours). College-based interpreter programs preferred. This program must include interpreting skills, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, the role of the interpreter and cross cultural communication. Mental health interpreting certificate desired.
Medical Interpreter Skills Test Certificate from an approved organization required.
Fluency in spoken and written English and the language of interpreting, with preference for native level fluency in the language of interpreting required.
Professional level medical interpreting and short non-publication translation skills required.
