Description

Job Purpose:

This is a professional position that is responsible for the intervention and stabilization of psychological and social needs presented by adults in psychiatric crisis. This position is a part of a community based, recovery oriented, team of people who provide prevention and intervention services to voluntary adults in psychiatric crisis at the CRC.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Work with police, family members and other service providers to intervene in and manage the acute crisis phase of adults transported to the CRC.

  2. Work with the CRC Registered Nurse and CRC Peer Support Specialist to identify medical, psychological and social needs of the adult in psychiatric crisis.

  3. Engage the consumer in the process of determining desired linkages to resources in the community that will assist them in stabilizing their crisis and improving the quality of their life.

  4. Link individual and family members with appropriate services in the community that address the underlying causes of the mental health crisis.

  5. Provide counseling and follow up that ensures smooth access to and procurement of services in the community until the mental health crisis is stabilized and the consumer has achieved their short-term goals.

  6. Facilitate peer support group sessions.

  7. Assess adult individuals brought to the CRC who are in immediate psychiatric distress. Assessments will be strength based while identifying immediate psychiatric concerns as well as social factors that contribute to the mental health crisis status.

  8. Provide accurate documentation and maintaining consumer files as required by agency policy, government regulations and applicable local, state and federal codes.

  9. Participate in collaborative team meetings, which identify strategies that address ongoing consumer concerns.

  10. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other service providers in the Milwaukee area.

  11. Collect, maintain and synthesize data that will assist in evaluating the quality-of-service delivery and overall program evaluation.

  12. Participate in collaborative team meetings designed to evaluate ongoing program operation and address team member concerns.

  13. Assist in various leadership roles within the team, ensuring all of the activities in the CRC are recovery oriented; assist with training of new staff and occasional facilitation of team meetings.

  14. Provide community education regarding crisis management and the mental health service industry.

  15. Perform duties as delegated under DHS 34 of the State Statutes in relation to psychiatric emergencies.

  16. Provide clinical supervision to staff in accord with DHS 34.

  17. Write consumer incident reports and ensure Director and RN each receives a copy.

  18. Maintain consistent oral and/or written communication with the CRC Director including regular program status reports.

  19. Attend and participate in in-service trainings, seminars and conferences as required.

  20. Serve as field instructor for students interning in the CRC.

  21. Responsible for adhering to agency policies and procedures while carrying out daily responsibilities.

  22. Other job-related duties as may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications

Required Technical Skills, Experience, Education, and Credentials:

  1. Master's Degree is required in the field of Social Work, Counseling, or related Human Services Field

  2. Minimum of 3,000 hours experience working with adults with severe and frequent mental illness.

  3. Travel is not required for this position

  4. Training license required.

  5. Master's prepared applicants who are not certified/licensed by the state of Wisconsin, may be hired in a Masters' prepared position but may only practice and bill within scope until certification/licensure is obtained with the expectation that it will be obtained within one year of hire. Applicant will remain on probationary employment status until certification/licensure is obtained.

  6. Must be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  7. Professional workplace appearance and conduct; friendliness and courtesy to clients, coworkers and vendors.

  8. Effectively communicates and develops good working relationships with co-workers.

  9. Reliability in reporting to work regularly and on time.

  10. Must possess good communication, listening, writing and organizational skills.

  11. Must be able to assist clients with activities of daily living, such as shopping, cleaning and cooking.

  12. Experience with adults undergoing a psychiatric crisis.

  13. Knowledge of community resources available to consumers in the Milwaukee County area.

  14. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing is desired.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee may experience or must do to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively over the telephone, by computer and in person.

  2. Ability to use a personal computer.

  3. Ability to perform well in a fast-paced work environment.

  4. On occasion must be able to push/pull/lift/move objects weighting at least 50 pounds.

  5. Must have the ability to climb at least two flights of stairs.

  6. Work is performed largely at the Crisis Resource Center, an office environment or other various settings.

  7. Hours of work will generally be during regular business hours and average at least 40 hours a week.

  8. This position requires participation in reoccurring ‘on-call’ duties and flexibility in daily work schedule to adequately meet program needs, which may include evenings or weekends.
