POSITION PURPOSE

As the Manager General Accounting and Accounts Payable, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of financial operations within our organization. Reporting directly to the Director Accounting, you will oversee a team responsible for managing general accounting and accounts payable processes, along with gas and electric energy accounting. Your leadership will be instrumental in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, optimizing financial processes, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises and mentors a team of accounting professionals by providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality work and professional development.

  • Oversees day-to-day operations and ensures timely and accurate completion of critical general accounting and accounts payable functions, including transaction processing, reconciliation, and reporting activities.

  • Manages month-end closing processes and ensures timely completion.

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including Finance, Operations, and Procurement to streamline processes, resolve issues, and support business objectives.

  • Manages relationships with external auditors and regulatory agencies including responding to inquiries as needed.

  • Identifies and recommends opportunities for process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and effectiveness within the department.

  • Stays abreast of industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes affecting accounting and accounts payable functions by proactively adapting policies and procedures as necessary.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert on accounting and accounts payable matters by providing guidance and support to internal stakeholders as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA certification preferred.

  • Five or more years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least two years in a supervisory or managerial role.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory requirements applicable to utilities or similar industries.

  • Experience with accounts payable processes, including invoice processing, vendor management, and payment processing.

  • Proficiency in accounting software systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and Microsoft Excel.

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on driving process improvements and operational efficiencies.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy, with a commitment to maintaining the integrity of financial data and ensuring compliance with internal controls.

JOB LOCATION

The position is hybrid, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life. We offer free, on-site parking and are located near biking trails and bus stops. Many employees enjoy the use of our many on-site EV charging stations.
