University of Maine System Assistant Professor of Marine Biology in Machias, Maine

Statement of the Job:

The University of Maine at Machias, a regional campus of the University of Maine, seeks to hire an assistant professor of marine biology with areas of concentration in marine ecology or a closely related field.

The Marine Biology program emphasizes hands-on, field-based research with undergraduates. Faculty, students, and graduates of the program collaborate closely with several regional organizations, and state and federal agencies to study issues of importance to the coastal life of Maine. Current areas of cooperation include shellfish ecology and aquaculture, ocean acidification, fisheries, and coastal restoration.

The person in this position should also be open to collaborative partnerships with faculty at the UMaine campus in Orono and affiliated marine research centers.

The program has concentrations in aquaculture, marine ecology, and coastal conservation. The person in this position will build on the existing strengths in these areas. For example, teaching could include courses in aquaculture, microbiology, marine ecology, senior capstones, experimental design, or any of several organismal courses. The person in this position will be expected to incorporate field research into their classes and work with small groups of students on research projects outside of classes, especially senior theses.

The distribution of the responsibilities is approximately 60% teaching, 30% research, and 10% service.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Marine Biology or closely related field

  • Active peer-reviewed publishing agenda

Preferred:

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level

  • Experience with species of economic importance to coastal communities

  • Experience collaborating with community organizations and/or government agencies
