The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED VACANCY.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • To increase delivery of direct treatment services by professional staff, the incumbent will provide 20 hours per week of functional skills and/or job coaching groups by planning, coordinating, and conducting same to include simulation exercises and classroom activities.

  • Provides Medication Education training according to CARF Standards.

  • Provides Human Sexuality Training to the people that we serve on a yearly basis.

  • To improve adaptive functioning of the individuals we serve, the incumbent actively participates in the treatment process by completing Rehabilitation Assessments, monitors performance and progress, provides written and verbal observations outcomes and recommendations for future treatment.

  • Provides documentation of individuals who have completed the Human Sexuality course and/or Medication Education.

  • To implement an outcome oriented management system, the incumbent attends meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to maintain certification requirements.

  • Maintains professional accountability by knowing policies, procedures and standards pertaining to the people we serve.

  • Responsible for own growth, development and refining of knowledge in both nursing and mental health fields by participating in inservice programs and continuing education.

  • Assists in the escorting and monitoring of the people we serve.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Skill in the use of medical equipment and instruments used in providing nursing care.

  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity.

  • Ability to administer medications.

  • Ability to work with patients.

  • Ability to interpret and follow medical instructions.

  • Ability to observe patients' symptoms and reactions to treatment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensure as a practical nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.22 or 8.27 or a multi-state license under the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
