The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders .

Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED VACANCY.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as an Automotive Equipment Mechanic II at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • The incumbent in this position is responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of the hospitals mission statement, vision, values, long term strategic objectives, annual business plans objectives, organizational structure and NEFSH operating procedures relevant to assigned duties and responsibilities. Complies with NEFSH Operating Procedures and Administrative directives.

  • Performs analysis of computer diagnostics to detect and determine mechanical and maintenance problems for vehicles, which is essential to preventing excessive costs that would be incurred in purchasing repair services externally.

  • Independently performs repair service, overhaul and maintenance work on gasoline motor vehicles, diesel tractors, E-Z Go carts, hi-lift, portable generators, portable arc welder and lawn equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, mud hogs and stump grinders.

  • Supervise Auto Equipment Mechanic I.

  • Repairs and replaces fuel injection, ignition, cooling, and exhaust systems on motor vehicles, tractors, and other lawn maintenance equipment.

  • Performs tune-ups, including replacing spark plugs, points, condensers; checks and sets timing.

  • Repairs and replaces lights and electrical equipment as needed.

  • Performs brake repairs including linings, pads, and wheel cylinders and adjusts brakes.

  • Installs and adjusts accessories such as heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.

  • Performs lubrication, changes oil, and transmission fluid, anti-freeze, and filters as needed.

  • Maintains cleanliness of motor vehicles.

  • Independently performs routine inspections of vehicles, tractors, backhoes, lawn equipment and other large equipment for needed items such as oil level and other fluid levels and checks for safety, using established preventive maintenance criteria.

  • Submits requests for new/replacement parts and equipment.

  • Maintains inventory records of gasoline and oil usage, parts, etc.

  • Provides specialized maintenance and repairs as follows:

  • School buses used for resident on-grounds transportation on a daily basis to the dining room, learning centers, medical appointments, and leisure activities.

  • Maintenance and repairs on these vehicles require advanced knowledge and skill to ensure that it operates in a safe and secure manner at all times.

  • Responsible for providing 24-hour service to all NEFSH vehicles.

  • Responds to emergencies on an as-needed basis. Performs oxygen acetylene and electric welding as necessary.

  • Independently acts as the hospital’s Energy Management Input System Coordinator; submits monthly reports as required.

  • Responsible for installation and maintenance of the FM communications system in 30 vehicles and 217 hand-held sets to ensure the safety of Individuals we serve and staff by providing communications to Security staff, and Transportation staff while on trips away from the facility with Individuals we serve (i.e., medical trips, discharges, etc.).

  • Performs other duties as required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the principles and basic techniques of automotive repair work.

  • Knowledge of the equipment and materials used in the repair of automotive equipment.

  • Skill in the use of hand tools and mechanical equipment.

  • Ability to perform a variety of automotive equipment repairs.

  • Ability to operate motor vehicles.

  • Ability to inspect and tune up equipment.

  • Ability to assist in body and fender repair work.

  • Ability to replace, repair and install accessories, such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc.

  • Ability to provide instruction to the lower level mechanics.

  • Ability to perform oxygen acetylene and electric welding.

  • Ability to repair and replace fuel injection systems.

  • Ability to review ignition systems, lights and instrument panels.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in automotive repair work.

  • Vocational/technical training in automotive repair can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
