GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The function of the asphalt roller operator is to smooth out and compress the asphalt into its final position on the roadway. This job is completed with an asphalt rolling machine. Operates tandem or three-wheel steel roller for finishing of bases and asphalt surfaces. May also operate rubber tired roller on bases and asphalt surfaces,

DUTIES / RESPONSIBLILITIES:

Asphalt rollers are responsible for properly operating an asphalt rolling machine. Rolling machine operators must be able to start and operate machine, including manipulating the levers that guide the machines attachments in an effort to create the smoothest and most level asphalt possible. Operate and maneuver roller as necessary to ascertain compaction of materials laid on roadway or jobsite through roller patterns and mix designs. Oil, grease, service, and make normal operating adjustments to equipment. Operators must be able to work under extreme temperature conditions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Must be physically able to climb off and on the equipment. Sit and drive approximately 70%; stand or walk approximately 30% of a 10 to 12 hour shift. Must have the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions; to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting, standing, or lying down; to time movements or the movement of a piece of equipment in anticipation of changes in the speed and/or direction of a moving object or scene; the ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away, or to judge the distance; and the ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or GED required. Must have valid Driver's License. Asphalt roller operators must be able to effectively communicate with fellow team members to ensure that the project is completed properly. Must be familiar with roller patterns and DOT requirements for specified mix designs, smoothness and proper sealing of surfaces. The Lynchburg division will consider training qualified candidates.
