Position Description:

The Business Analyst will assist the Data Management Division (DMD) and data governance functions in defining and developing standards, processes, and metrics to advance Texas Tech University’s (TTU) Data Governance agenda under the guidance of the Executive Director. Other responsibilities include collecting, analyzing and developing data relative to area, making recommendations and assisting in implementation of projects. Work is performed under general supervision with latitude for independent judgment in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • While limited management oversight may be expected for specific projects, this position is expected to exercise discretion and independent judgment of the following duties:

  • Performs mid-level business and systems analysis, including gathering, developing, and documenting user requirements and business cases, assessing business processes, and collaborating with stakeholders for detailed business requirements related to data governance.

  • Data asset inventory management including outputs, key data elements, and dependencies to create an enterprise data model that supports business impact analysis and controlled change management.

  • Assist the Data Governance Project Manager with Operational activities including coordination and communication with the Data Stewardship Council, Business Data Steward Teams, Data Owners, Data Stewards, and stakeholders including the creation of documentation and other resources to disseminate knowledge across organizational boundaries.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure alignment with Data Governance strategies, support project planning and execution, facilitate best practices, assist in improved data quality, assist in tracking project progress, communicate updates, and provide training and documentation for new data governance policies or systems.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and the Data Governance Project Director to tailor the data literacy program to support the university’s mission, and lead data stewardship working groups to foster a data-driven culture at TTU.

  • Assist the Data Governance Project Manager with management and oversight of the analytics catalog, metadata and references, and consumption metadata analysis to provide informational resources that can be incorporated into data literacy and used by the Data Governance program to inform decisions.

  • Adheres to all appropriate Institutional policies and other relevant internal departmental policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with data management principles, data governance, or related role

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and convey complex information to a non-technical audience

  • Analytical mindset and attention to detail for evaluating and improving data quality and governance processes

  • Knowledge of relevant data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and their impact on data governance practices

  • Technical writing experience with the ability to explain complex topics in a way most people can understand.

  • Ability to work under pressure and successfully manage multiple overlapping deadlines

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of data governance principles, data quality management, data privacy, and regulatory compliance

  • Familiarity with data management tools, metadata repositories, and data modeling concepts

  • Familiarly with enterprise information tools like SQL Server, Power BI, Oracle, etc.

  • Understanding of Master Data, Metadata, Reference Data, Data Warehousing, and BI principles and processes including technical architecture
