RWS Entertainment Group Special Effects Technician in Los Angeles, California

Special Effects Technician

Location: Various sites across the US

Dates: Starting June through early/mid November

Position Summary:

The Special Effects Technician has basic experience with special effects gear and/or build of special effects units for the following but not limited to: fog/haze, flame effects, pyrotechnics (1.3g and/or 1.4g), pneumatic effects, and water effects. A strong ability to read diagrams and prints of either build from scratch or "off the shelf" effects will also be needed. The Special Effects Technician should be safety conscious on site and with their install/build to confirm we're leaving a safe environment when the install is complete.

Essential Duties:

  • Safely install or build any effects used in a project alongside any other discipline working directly with elements associated with the effect.

  • Work with the TD on site to confirm safety of all personnel and guests.

  • Work cleanly and efficiently to deliver a stunning final event.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or GED

Preferred: Vocational or technical training - Field of Study: welding, engineering, rigging, carpentry, electronics, audio, construction, electrician. The knowledge needed for this position are often not found in traditional college educations. Technical theatre education will be the closest thing, but so would any education in audio, lighting, electronics, rigging, welding, carpentry, design, 3D modeling software. It's a myriad of technical skills that makes this a helpful education.

EXPERIENCE:

1 to 2 years of experience in the technical entertainment field.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid driver's license required. OSHA and similar construction safety certification(s) helpful.

Key Compentencies:

  • Basic understandings of job site safety, power, pneumatics, plumbing, carpentry, welding, handling/loading/striking pyrotechnics are circumstantial but a must.

  • Solutions-based troubleshooting.

  • Friendly and proactive personality.

  • Ability to interface with clients, coworkers, and laborers to maintain a positive work environment.

  • Organizational skills - in office and on-site.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and customer service - communicates through various mediums such as email, text, phone, and in-person conversations.

  • Awareness of dangers and hazards associated with job functions and willingness to mitigate those risks.

Work Environment:

While on-site, frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters. The Special Effects Technician will often be on-site and need to work in hot/humid, cold/freezing, rain, and snow conditions to complete the job before the deadline.

Physical Effort:

Strenuous - physical effort represented by frequent handling of heavy objects (approx. 50-70 lbs.) and materials, or heavy hand tools. While on-site the Special Effects Technician frequently operates heavy equipment and heavy hand tools. Standing for long periods of time and often kneeling and bending.

Hazards:

Frequent existing or potential hazards. Moderate existing or potential hazards. In office, there is very little exposure to hazards. While on-site, there is regular exposure to: working at heights over 50 feet, working in and around heavy equipment, exposure to chemicals and regular use of cutting tools such as saws and grinders.

Salary:

$350/day
