LECTURER, GENERAL EDUCATION UCLA CLUSTER PROGRAM

Sex: From Biology to Gendered Society

The UCLA Undergraduate Education Initiatives unit seeks one lecturer to teach both Fall and Spring quarters in Academic Year 2024-25 for a lower division undergraduate course as part of the General Education UCLA Cluster Program.

This position includes team-teaching the lectures for Cluster M72, Sex: From Biology to Gendered Society, which examines the nature and meaning of sex and gender through the study of biology, psychology, anthropology, and social structure. The course engages students in active dialogue and debate to teach them to be fluent in interdisciplinary approaches involving multiple levels of analysis (micro-level, such as genes and hormones, to macro-level, such as social institutions and culture. We are specifically seeking a scholar who can provide perspectives on cutting-edge biological technology and social policy affecting sex and gender. This position will entail team coordination and contribution to generation of writing assignments, exam questions, and grading of student submissions.

UCLA has a diverse student population in one of the more diverse cities in the nation; we particularly seek candidates who have a strong track record of student success and engagement in large courses at a major research university, as reflected in student evaluations.

Required Qualifications:

● An earned doctorate or the equivalent from an accredited university (master’s level may be appropriate if candidate has a very strong teaching and/or research record)

● College-level teaching experience, especially to a General Education population in large courses

● Knowledge and training/background in Biology with a focus on cutting-edge concepts related to sex, such as latest reproductive technologies.

● Must have demonstrated ability to create classroom content using current research literature in lieu of a textbook.

Preferred Qualifications:

● At least three years of college-level teaching experience with a proven ability to receive excellent teaching evaluations in diverse settings

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Must be capable of delivering high-quality instruction to a diverse student body at a major research university.
