DEFINITION :

Provides nursing assistance to physicians in a community heath or hospital clinic or a Probation Department dispensary or infirmary.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:

Positions allocable to this class are responsible for providing assistance to physicians conducting diagnostic physical examinations and performing medical treatments by readying patients and examining rooms, making vital sign observations, administering ordered medications and treatments, and reinforcing the physicians' instructions to the patients. Duties performed require application of nursing principles and techniques normally acquired through the completion of vocational nurse training. Work is performed under the direction of a physician or the immediate supervision of a registered nurse and follows their specific instructions and the established nursing procedures for the particular clinic dispensary, or infirmary. The work of positions in this class is reviewed in progress and upon completion. Assignments are made to one or more clinics being conducted for screening or for specific diseases or for a variety of illnesses, such as orthopedic, chest, cardiac, or family planning, or to a dispensary or infirmary which provides treatment for minor illnesses.

Essential Job Functions

Reviews patient's records to determine the purpose of the visit and whether or not patient's chart, x-rays or lab test results are ready or must be located for the physician.

Interviews patient or a member of the patient's family to obtain medical history and records it on appropriate forms.

Sets up the area to be used by the physician by obtaining and arranging the required supplies, equipment and instruments and the patients' charts, x-ray, and lab test results.

Observes patients to determine condition and need for immediate referral to physician.

Takes patients' blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration.

Prepares the patient for examination and for treatment by the physician by transferring, positioning and draping the patient and cleansing areas of the patient's body, and hands instruments to the physician during treatments and procedures.

In accordance with the physician's orders, administers medications and immunizations orally and by intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Gives supplies of ordered medications to the patient and informs patients about the medication procedure ordered by the physician by explaining the type of medication ordered, when and how to use it, and any side effects or reactions he might experience and what he should do in this event.

Performs treatments under the direction of physicians including suture removal, applying Ace or Butterfly bandages to newly sutured wounds, changing sterile and unsterile dressings such as hand dressings or 4x4 gauze, and fitting elastic hosiery to patients with varicosities.

Conducts visual examinations of school children to check for overt signs of communicable diseases such as sores or throat swelling and, in the absence of such signs, completes school readmission slips.

Answers telephone calls and provides caller with information about services available at the clinics, or for the purpose of canceling or rescheduling clinic appointments.

Administers Mantoux or atypical mycobacteria skin tests by subcutaneous injection and records results.

Collects and labels specimens of urine, sputum and feces and various kinds of smears for cultures.

Orders nursing supplies needed to maintain adequate levels for one or more clinic.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

A *license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.

LICENSE(S) REQUIRED:

PHYSICAL CLASS:

Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:

Additional credit will be given for experience related to the desirable qualification.

  • Experience working in shelters or street encampments assisting people experiencing homelessness or with vulnerable populations to provide direct care, referrals, and linkage to services and community resources, or referral to mental health resources as a license Vocational Nurse.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualification based on information listed on the online application and supplemental questionnaire at the time of filing, weighted 100%. Additional credit will be given for experience related to the desirable qualification.

Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%.
