DESCRIPTION
LECTURER, Biomedical Ethics
Department of Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology
Open until filled.
Position: The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology seeks a dynamic instructor to teach an undergraduate level Biomedical Ethics course for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. The course:
• Examines importance of ethics in research and exploration of how and why bioethics is relevant to reproductive screening, policy formation, public regulation, and law.
• Provides foundation in traditional ethics, consideration of subcategories of bioethics, neuroethics, and eugenics, and how to apply ethics to contemporary issues in research and technology.
DUTIES: Teach lecture course on biomedical ethics. Plan and coordinate discussion activities for multiple sections of courses; supervise course teaching assistants; manage the acquisition and maintenance of course materials; supervise student projects; and maintain office hours.
QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in Philosophy required. Experience teaching bioethics, medical ethics, philosophy of medicine, philosophy of science, or contemporary moral problems. Research in applied ethics not required, but desirable. Commitment to keeping this course agile, changing and updating material as contemporary moral challenges in medicine and science emerge and evolve. Fluency with contemporary literature in these fields is thus required. Demonstrated experience teaching sensitive and controversial material in respectful and effective ways, especially in a large lecture class format. Experience, skill, and enthusiasm in teaching Diversity-course content.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Fall 2024, Winter 2025 and Spring 2025 quarters.
