Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Computer Aided Designer (CAD) and Checker/Mechanical Engineering Technologist 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Use your design skills to support national security! The Mechanical and Thermal Engineering (E-1) Group is searching for a Senior Computer Aided Designer and Checker to join our team. You will work as a senior mechanical designer responsible for solving a wide range of mechanical engineering problems including designing mechanical hardware, fixturing and tooling; developing and deploying instrumentation and data acquisition solutions; and ensuring fabrication and assembly operations are completed as designed. This position requires expert skill using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and the ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to capture mechanical engineering designs. As a senior mechanical designer, you will collaborate with engineers, technologists, designers and leadership advising on mechanical design problems and ensure that product definition release meets performance and engineering requirements.

You will be required to have excellent communication skills and be able to promote a strong collaborative environment that is respectful of diverse technical backgrounds. You also may supervise aspects of work of others and help train junior designers in mechanical design. You will be responsible for authoring engineering documents including test plans, procedures, reports and engineering requirements.

The Mechanical and Thermal (E-1) group partners with programs and innovators to deliver applied mechanical and thermal engineering solutions for LANL's core national security missions and a variety of complementary programs. Our mechanical engineers, technologists, technicians and designers have a passion for solving challenging technical problems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Expert use of SolidWorks and/or Creo to capture engineering design intent for mechanical hardware and to generate models, assemblies and drawing for complex mechanical designs. Expert knowledge of applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to designs. Expert use of Product Data Management (PDM) solution in support of mechanical design definition. Demonstrated experience checking CAD models and drawings for form, fit, and function; GD&T, conducting tolerance and stack analysis as well as following design standards compliance.

Mechanical Design and Production

Advanced knowledge of fabrication and inspection technologies for mechanical hardware. Demonstrated experience developing engineering documents such as test plans, procedures, reports and engineering requirements.

Communication and Teamwork

Experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers in a collaborative work environment that promotes diversity and is respectful of diverse technical backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in a variety of communication mediums including oral and written presentations and reports.

Leadership

Demonstrated ability to lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution. Demonstrated ability to work independently, under minimal supervision while organizing, prioritizing and following through on multiple tasks to completion under strict deadlines and changing priorities.

Education/Experience : A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • GD&T certification

  • Experience with Model-based definition (MBD)

  • Faro inspection and scanning tool expertise

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, procedures, and operations

  • Demonstrated experience working as a technical liaison within the DOE Complex

  • Active DOE Q Clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
