What You Will Do

The Engineered Materials group (MST-7) of Materials Science & Technology Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly qualified and motivated post-baccalaureate student to assist in thermomechanical analysis of polymers and other material systems. The student will implement Python and other programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, R) to prepare and analyze data generated from several characterization techniques, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and mechanical testing. Additionally, the role will include development of automated scripts for data analysis which will streamline and enhance our research processes.

As a post-baccalaureate student, you will contribute to a variety of materials research projects. In this role, you will be working side-by-side with a mentor to identify areas in which you can both learn and provide much-needed research support. You will also collaborate with other research scientists, research engineers, post-doctoral researchers, research technologists, research technicians, and students which will enable you to gain a broad understanding of the work performed at LANL.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Experience with scripting using general-purpose programming languages, such as Python, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Tcl, R, or other relevant language.

• Cursory knowledge of data collection, processing, and analysis.

Education/Experience:

• BS/BA Degree from an accredited program in engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, or related field completed within the past 3 years with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Desired Qualifications:

• A strong background in Python is not necessary but a willingness to learn and apply Python for our purposes is essential.

• Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g., DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA).

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently to meet programmatic milestones and scientific goals.

Additionally, our group will offer guidance and training to help develop these skills.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.
