Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The High Explosives Science and Technology group (Q-5) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a motivated analytical chemist to analyze perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS are substances that are toxic to both people and the environment, and this project aims to characterize and identify previous and/or current use of PFAS at LANL. This analysis will include method development, optimization, and validation with the use of GC-MS and LC-MS instrumentation. Therefore, knowledge and previous use of these instruments will be valuable. The candidate will apply the developed methodology to analyze PFAS within plastic bonded explosives.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in gas chromatography and/or liquid chromatography preferable with mass spectrometry.

  • Demonstration of a strong background in analytical chemistry.

  • Written and oral communication skills as shown by a publication and/or presentation record.

  • Chemometric experience (e.g., Matlab, Python, R, C++).

  • An ability to work in a diverse and dynamic team environment.

  • Attention to detail and safety and willingness to work with hazardous materials

Education : Candidates must have received a Ph.D in chemistry within the last five years or will have completed all degree requirements by the commencement of the appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with GC or LC coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry.

  • Experience in multi-dimensional chromatography.

  • Extensive instrumentation usage.

  • Knowledge of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $92,000. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Q Clearance: Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
