Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Associate in Simulation of Electron Diffraction in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

MST-8 is seeking a postdoc to examining 3D nanoscale defect strain fields through simulations of electron diffraction patterns. The electron simulation techniques will encompass S-TEM simulations using Py4DSTEM, abTEM, and other S-TEM simulation codes. This effort will be accompanied by mechanics-based simulations using discrete dislocation dynamics and phase field simulation codes. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in constructing a framework that connects mechanics-based simulations, electron-based simulations, and EM datasets to extract 3D strain fields of nanoscale defects. Additionally, the selected candidate will assess the impact of these defects on the mechanical properties of materials through simulations. This position entails collaboration with a multi-lab team of experimentalists and modelers to develop a multimodal examination framework for nanoscale defects' 3D strain fields.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise is required in electron microscopy simulations (e.g., HRSTEM simulation, STEM simulation, 4D-STEM simulation) via codes such as abTEM and Py4DSTEM.

  • Experience handling 4D-STEM and STEM datasets

  • Demonstrated knowledge of transmission electron microscopy, including 4D-STEM, CBED, energy-filtered techniques.

Education: A PhD in materials science, physics, computer science, chemistry, or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Py4DSTEM code, abTEM code, and other electron-based simulation codes for simulating STEM datasets and 4D-STEM datasets

  • Experience with EM base lattice strain measurements (PED, nano-beam diffraction, GPA, PPA, 4D-STEM, energy-filtered STEM)

  • Knowledge of mechanics-based simulations

  • Knowledge of metal deformation and solid mechanics

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $92,000.
