What You Will Do

The Post-Masters Science Library Research Assistant will help to provide core services to Laboratory staff, scientists, and engineers. We seek a versatile individual eager to help shape the future of the LANL Research Library and work collaboratively to develop and implement next-generation reference and library outreach services. In alignment with our mission and vision, the Research Library has adopted an Agile framework -- an iterative approach to project management -- to sustain its ability to deliver innovative and responsive public services.

Specific tasks may include:

• Conducting science instruction responsibilities will include library research support, online education courses, specialized training, orientations, and workshops.

• Providing reference support via chat, email, virtually and/or in-person.

• Creating outreach/educational materials such as video tutorials, LibGuides, website content, blog posts, and print materials.

• Contribute to the Library's mass indexing effort of our technical reports.

• Assisting with team projects that promote communication and open science in the digital age, such as: cataloging, processing technical reports, data management, research repository development assistance, assisting with ORCiD integration with key research workflows; and open access publishing.

• Reviewing collections for retention decisions.

• Contributing to making scientific research and data outputs sharable and reproducible following the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Ability to use standard reference tools and databases, including online resources to fulfill customer reference requests

• Knowledge of key science resources and database (ex: Scopus)

• Instruction experience, both in-person and online

• Experience or training in developing marketing materials (including newsletters, blog posts, data visualizations and promotional graphics) and online resources such as tutorials, surveys, and guides.

• Commitment to user-centered services and the ability to work and communicate effectively in a diverse and distributed team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

• Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Librarianship: Educational background or experience in a STEM-related discipline, in one of the major areas of research in the scope of the Laboratory (preferred: Chemistry, Physics, or Biology). Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities surrounding open science, scholarly publishing, and communications in STEM fields.

• Experience working or interning in a scientific research library, laboratory or information center is preferred or experience working with science researchers.

• Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning: Knowledge of or enthusiastic curiosity regarding generative artificial intelligence, large language models, etc. particularly in research.

Work Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. The term of the appointment is 1 to 2 years.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
