What You Will Do

The Group of Condensed Matter and Complex Systems in the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening of a graduate research assistant position in the area of computational condensed matter and materials physics. The student will work on applying first-principles DFT and Green's function methods for discovering novel two-dimensional magnets composed of rare earth elements. The goals of these efforts are to (i) provide fundamental insight into the delicate interplay between dimensionality, local f-states, and magnetism in real correlated materials, and (ii) accelerate the development of next-generation microelectronics. Successful applicants will have an opportunity to interact with a dynamic team of condensed matter theory and experiment scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

A successful candidate must demonstrate strong skills in computational materials physics, e.g. electronic structure calculations, with a strong record of scientific achievement. The ability to work creatively as a part of a diverse team is important. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.

Education : Candidates must be enrolled in a Physics, Chemistry, and/or Materials Science Ph.D. program and in good academic standing.

Desired Qualifications:

• Programming skills in either Python, C++, or Fortran.

• Experience working in Linux computing environments, especially in the context of high-performance computers.

• Working experience with Wien2k or other all-electron DFT methods

Work Location:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
