Los Alamos National Laboratory Building Automation System Team Leader (Maintenance Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Building Automation Systems (BAS) Team Leader is a member of the Building Automation and Operational Technology Team within Maintenance and Site Services (MSS) which includes controls engineers, computer scientists, a network engineer, and field technicians. This dynamic team works closely with and supports the energy reduction goals of the Sustainability Program through the ongoing maintenance, operation, and optimization of the building automation systems and building performance analytics. The Team Leader requires a demonstrated ability to influence and inspire team members and upper management toward a shared vision of Building Automation and the role it plays in maintenance and sustainability. Clear communication, the ability to listen, and understand the needs of the team members is crucial to this position.

The BAS Team Leader is responsible for coordinating the troubleshooting, maintenance, installation, and commissioning of BAS and associated equipment. This position will serve the subject matter expert on Building Automation and controls and will ensure the team and facility meets Federal and LANL regulatory requirements. This position will perform master level building automation work with considerable independence and latitude in judgment concerning methods, materials, and priority of work, and is responsible for ensuring efficient operation of controls functions according to their design and supports the goals of the MSS-MP and UI Sustainability Program. In addition, the team members also provide technical solutions and support for data collection, analysis, dashboarding and other support to Operations, Maintenance, Metering, and other programs throughout the Lab.

This position is also responsible for the long-term strategic planning, budgeting, and growth for BAS and related systems, leading the effort to design and develop organizational policies, procedures, and practices relevant to operation and maintenance activities and relations with adjacent organizations across the lab, and monitoring and contributing to management of BAS system engineering activities, while coordinating with the Lead Field Technician on subcontracted and/or in-house facility BAS maintenance services.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Facility Management

Extensive knowledge of component and instrumentation troubleshooting and preventative maintenance with a strong analytical ability for understanding and interpreting building system trend data as it applies to root cause analysis. Ability to read and understand control drawings, electronic schematics, electrical diagrams and construction drawings. In-depth knowledge of electronic, electrical and mechanical systems and digital controls, and HVAC system configurations.

Operations Management

Knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering problems. Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria for energy management, sustainability, and building automation systems. Extensive knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.

Leadership and Management

Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership, mentorship, prioritization, and management of assigned employees in a collaborative and inclusive environment. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills within a facility management work environment.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD).

  • Experience in writing policies and procedures.

  • In-depth knowledge of the Laboratory's organizational structure.

  • Demonstrated experience with LANL business systems for management and administration of personnel including timekeeping, payroll, budgeting, travel, training and certification, performance reviews, and payroll policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of LANL maintenance program policy and procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present technical briefings to large groups of a diverse workforce representative of all types and levels of workers.

  • Active Q clearance.

  • Engineering or degree in related discipline preferred.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
