What You Will Do

We are seeking an outstanding scientific leader to serve as the Group Leader (GL) for the newly formed Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear Deterrence (AI4ND) group within the Computational Physics Division. AI4ND is an interdisciplinary group dedicated to exploring and implementing artificial intelligence technologies to enhance national security capabilities. The group focuses on developing and delivering AI-driven solutions by leveraging several flavors of generative AI, machine learning and data analytics methodologies and workflows. AI4ND aims to provide advanced tools and strategies to address emerging threats, improve decision-making processes, and ensure the safety and resilience of the Nuclear Security Enterprise. As a GL you will be responsible for building and developing the AI talent pipeline, developing the vision and setting the scientific direction of the AI team, delivering high quality methods, tools and workflows, and maintaining an active personal research program that aligns with the group's mission. The selected candidate will be responsible for managing a large team, , a diverse budget portfolio, and support a variety of Laboratory missions, including stockpile stewardship, nonproliferation, and threat reduction. The ideal candidate is one who will demonstrate curiosity and seek out new ideas with openness. If selected, you will work closely with the Division office and be empowered to embrace innovation and the uncertainty that is inherent in program development and staffing up in a new field of research.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge and Expertise

Strong background in one or more of the following - AI/ML algorithm development, application or architecture design.

An outstanding record of research and/or programmatic accomplishment in machine learning and artificial intelligence research as evidenced by publications, citations, presentations, grants, or programmatic support, and/or leadership of large technical projects.

Broad familiarity with areas relevant to the Nuclear Security Enterprise mission.

Talent Acquisition and Growth

Expert-level experience attracting, evaluating, mentoring, developing, motivating, and retaining a creative, diverse workforce within a technical organization while creating a positive work environment.

Leadership and Collaboration

Demonstrated experience in strategic program development, leadership, and execution including success at project planning, budget management and reporting.

Demonstrated leadership skills including, relationship building, collaboration, decision making and risk management under uncertainty.

Communication

Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by successful internal and external interactions through briefings, presentations and writings to a variety of audiences.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, science or engineering from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, science or engineering in a specialization relevant to XCP-AI4ND is strongly preferred.

• Proficiency with developing and using Machine Learning methods including Deep Learning.

• Knowledge of the activities, needs, and workflow of the nuclear weapons computational physics and design communities.

• Demonstrated knowledge of data and computing infrastructure needs for AIML workflows.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
