DescriptionDEPARTMENT: CAMP GIFFORD POSITION TITLE: WATERFRONT ASSISTANT (LIFEGUARD) STATUS: SEASONAL, FULL TIME SUPERVISOR: DISCOVERY CAMP DIRECTOR MISSION STATEMENT: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. SCOPE OF POSITION: Provide Lifeguard Services at the Waterfront. Maintain a safe and clean area at all times. Render CPR and/or First Aid as required by any situation. EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE: High School Graduate, some college preferred but not mandatory At least two years' experience as a lifeguard preferably in a summer camp or recreational program preferred KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED. Possess good verbal and written communication skills Pass a child safety background check Detail oriented and well organized Knowledge of children/personnel safety, planning, problem solving, and crisis intervention American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for Professional Rescuer ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist the Waterfront Program Leader in planning and implementing of all Waterfront activities including but not limited to electives, free-time, and cabin activities Create an environment that leads groups to success Know the type of group, and the specific needs of the group you're working with Maintain open, friendly, and professional relationships with participants Maintain an attitude of fun and excitement Use encouragement and positive reinforcement in all situations Lead elective classes for groups ranging from 8 to 20 campers (e.g. beginning swimming, kayaking, water games) Clearly communicate the instructions for each elective in a fun and creative manner Have all equipment prepared before the campers' arrival Ensure the safety of campers and staff Lead briefing and debriefing sessions with each group Communicate the objective of the activities Observe groups' responses to each challenge and formulate appropriate questions to encourage group learning and growth Initiate and facilitate final wrap-up session at the end of each course to sum up the experience and point campers to Christ in transferring their learning Assist in responsibilities in the supervision, coordination of water safety program Provide life-guard services Respond to emergency situations and if necessary, administer CPR/First Aid Prepare and submit accident/incident reports Monitor activities at the lakefront to prevent accidents Maintain a vigilant watch of the lakefront areas per policies and procedures Ensure the safety of all lakefront users and staff Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards Enforce and adhere to waterfront rules and regulations Follow emergency policies and procedures in the event of an emergency Participate and instruct other staff on emergency water safety and first-aid techniques Inspect all water equipment and immediately report any defects to the Lead Lifeguard Supervise lake aides while they are on duty Maintain a clean lake area at all times Conduct property safety checks Maintain safety as the top priority GENERAL DUTIES: Exhibit effective Christ-like conduct and service as an appropriate example for campers and staff Give support to the total camping program performing all other duties required to provide a consistently excellent program Attend and participate in all camp programs as required including, but not limited to evening programs, chapel activities, and staff meetings Follow all policies and procedures Ma
